    Total novice to this topic.

What are the main differences / merits between these two brands ?

Are they compatible i.e. can you use one maker's track and power supply with another's locos and rolling stock ?

Yes. I mix and match bachmann carriages with hornby track, well the track is more likely to be made by some setup like PECO.
And I happily run Murphy Models CIE 071 locomotive on hornby. Murphy Models locos can now be configured to run on analogue and digital track (In fact the cab lights will only work with digital :( )

    regarding power supply:

using hornby analogue with bachmann analogue locos should be ok in theory.

I'd be more wary about mixing bachmann and hornby digital power supplies.

edit: Bachmann is manufactured as high quality product.
