Tailors in Dublin (or Ireland) that can put together a coat

Just to set things straight here, when I say the word "coat", I mean this type of clothing: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/72/2e/2e/722e2eea3ff5865bd0b5718046c8e3c3--mens-long-coat-mens-wool-coats.jpg

Not specifically the one in the image, but basically a not to shiny, soft jacket that cover the upper half of the body and 1/3 to 1/2 of your legs.

However I am unable to find a winter (read: thicker) coat that fits me to save my life. I've looked through a bunch of stores irl and online and these type of (already somewhat rare) clothes just don't come in the weird sizes that my body demands.

So I've been thinking about getting one done by a tailor, especially since it's a "buy once" type item I figured that the extra cost won't kill me. With shirts I've had quite a lot of success using shirtbyhand.ie, but sadly enough they don't do any type of coats.

I'm wondering if any of you could recommend a tailor around Dublin (or a bloke that takes my measurements and sends them to someone in India that does all the work and mails it back... I don't mind either) that would venture into such projects ?

I'm not looking for a particularly fancy look, I'd be happy with an average coat as long as it's warm and fits me. Budget wise I'd prefer to keep it as low as I can, since I'm not really a believer in the whole "price equals quality" thing, but I'm definitely looking more towards a tailor shop off the beaten path rather than a "bespoke suits" bull**** shop in the city center.

I think the best idea would be to buy a coat you like and then have it adjusted by a tailor. Afaik that's what 'made to measure' is.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "Afaik that's what 'made to measure' is."...

Also it seems slightly count intuitive to buy a coat and get it fitted rather than have one made to fit me from the get go.

A once off coat from scratch could be expensive, as they'd have to have all the materials, and the machines/skills to do so. But if you found a tailor that had a jacket you liked, you could then have them alter it to fit you. Some of the larger clothes shops to alterations.

The coat is a trenchcoat. Perhaps look at M&S, or Zara? Or maybe Brown Thomas? Had suit pants altered once in BT, so they may be able to alter the coat for you.

'Made to measure' is where an off the peg garment is adjusted by a tailor to the customer's measurements.

'Bespoke' is when the tailor starts from scratch. Much more expensive.

Be careful. You may end up influencing a generation of Russian writers.

Would you be knowledgeable enough about this stuff to know what kind of adjustments can be made ?

I am ~210cm tall and relatively broad in the shoulders. So straight away maybe 10% of coats are broad enough for me and I'd probably need 30-40cm added to most of them in length.

On top of that if they are not made for winter I'd need some extra padding and usually I'd need them tightened around the waist (since size 46-50 seem to be intended for fatter gentlemen most of the time) ?

I know **** about tailoring, but I'd assume it would be much easier to make a new one rather than modify an existing one to such an extend.

Also, would you know what is the price range for a so called 'Bespoke' coat ?

No, not an expert by any means. :)

Basically, I would think it best to find a coat you like, of a size where nothing is too tight/small/short. The last thing you want to be doing is letting out (making larger) or letting down (making longer).

It is usually much easier (and the result is much better) to take a garment in (make it smaller/tighter/shorter).

Made to measure will cost a lot less than bespoke, even more so if you bring a suitable coat to your tailor.

I think I remember reading that, in the same shop, bespoke can be three times the cost of made to measure.

Well, the problem with finding a coat of a size that I like is that they are pretty much non existent. When I've found some they are usually shipped from south-west Asia (and I'd rather not wait 30-50 days) or very expensive... and I think at the point where a coat costs 300euros + adjustments I'd rather just pay the extra and get a custom tailored one.

Try Johnston Tailors in Tullow Co carlow , they kitted out Michael D when he was hangin with Lizzy Windsor.
Magee in donegal could be worth a try also

Surely if you find a proper men's drapers or whatever they can measure you and tell you whether they can order something in the correct size?

I'd rather not travel half a country away to do this, especially since I live within a 30 minutes drive of 1/3 of the population in the country, hence why I asked for Dublin tailors.

But I will give a look, in the end if I can't find anything good in Dublin the trip may be worth it.
