Side extension max width.

If I were to build a single storey extension on to the side of a semidetached house with hip roof, is there a planning guideline that says the width of the extension cannot be more than half the width of the original house? Someone in work said it to me, but I can't find any reference to it in county council guideline documents, but I have noticed most side extensions I have seen are not very wide.
I have a wide plot, so it would be good to use the whole width of it for a side extension.
    Any advice appreciated.

To the side, planning is required.

There are guidelines or Defined restrictions.

Local precedence will generally dictate what is feasible

A local arch would typically advise.

You can go any width you want subject to planning.
    What width have you got?
Are you in an urban or rural setting?

I have 7.5m room to the side of the house. Would want to keep a metre for side entry. House is 5.5m wide.
    House is in urban area.

    House is in urban area.

No apparent reason why it should be refused.
I’ve done similar sized in North Dublin before.

Once you apply for planning then they will either grant it or condition it to be reduced in width.

If it meets a number of criteria it may be planning exempt.

Its to the side of the house, it could never be exempt.

No it won’t, as explained in the second post.

Ok I skipped by that part (its early), planning will need to be sought

The linked guide is still a useful resource
