    Hi,

Just looking for any thoughts or opinions on buying either an Mercedes E Class Coupe or a 4 Series Coupe?

It will be bought new in Ireland and the car is for my wife who is in her early 40s. She is not madly into cars but just wants a "sports Coupe that looks good" Budget 55-60k

Probably going for diesel for resale value considerations and because modern 4 cylinder diesels seem better than comparable 4 cylinder petrols.

Just curious anyone's opinion on which car to go for????

What sort of mileage will she be doing? If not a lot, then I think steer clear of Diesel. Big shift towards Hybrid and Electric vehicles even back towards petrol recently. Diesel hasn't been touched in budgets so far but will probably be dealt with in a year or 2 which will affect resale value.
As for the two cars mentioned above, I love the look of the E-class coupe. It has a beautiful rear-end and in my opinion the inside is a far nicer place to be then BMWs at the moment.
If you could be swayed towards a Hybrid, would you consider a Lexus RC300h? I think a really nice car to look at and it'll be that bit rarer to see on the road then a Merc or BMW.

Where did you read that? 4 cylinder petrol engines in either of these cars don't offer much of a performance advantage over the 4 cylinder diesels but they would still be more refined and probably less likely to give trouble.

BTW The E Class coupe is a class above the 4 Series and more comparable with the 6 Series coupe. The C Class would be a rival to the 4 Series.

The C Class coupe would be a bit newer than the 4 Series which has been around for a number of years now. BMW interiors are usually love it or hate it and the 4 Series interior feels a bit dated now but is still a very good car to drive. An Audi A5 coupe is worth looking at also if she likes her premium feel interiors or bit of a daring and unique outsider would be the Lexus RC 300h hybrid if she is not doing long journeys.

Mileage is only 20,000km per year. So wouldn't really warrant a diesel. Trouble is the 4 cylinder petrol merc engine isn't really that great to drive. The torque of the diesel IMO suits the car. Yes ideally a 6 pot petrol would be great.
Same goes for the 4 series.

I agree about the looks of the E Class it really is a beautiful looking car from all angles.

Not too keen on the Lexus. But interesting suggestion.

Does it have to be brand new? There is a nice 2016 440i Gran Coupe for sale in a Dublin BMW dealer that would blow the socks off the others. That would be a very nice car for someone not doing a lot of miles.

get ready to lose 20% of that car value minimum in the first year, if bought new here! and not as a demo etc...

A petrol straight 6 BMW would be brilliant and is ideally what BM's should all be. But it has to be new and I doubt she would ever really exercise the car properly!

I have driven the 4 cylinder petrols of both cars and I find them a little unrefined and free revving. Sort of need to be pushed hard to move. IMO didn't suit the car.
I'm trying to test drive the E300 engine and would be interested to see what it's like.

In this case depreciation isn't a consideration. Car allowance with work.
