Running tops from China

    Hi all,

I organise an annual charity event and one of my biggest expenses is paying for the running tops (c. 1500 participants).

I know they come from China so I am wondering how much I can save by going straight to the source (Alibaba).

I am trying to figure out what other charges/costs (other than production and shipping) that I need to be wary off.

The tops are given out to all participants for free so I would not be selling them so I am wondering if that makes any difference. Probably not!

Any help/advice/similar experiences would be most welcome.

    Felix

unfortunately for you it makes no difference. the items still have a value and any vat or import duties will be paid on that value.

    Thanks ohnonotgmail,

I had a feeling that would be the case.

How do I work out the vat/import duties? I'll assume the vat is 23% but what would be the import rate?

    Thanks again for your help!

the import duty will be 12%. vat is 23%. there is a sticky at the top of the forum that tells you how this is applied. dont forget that duty will be on the price including shipping. Vat is on top of top of all that.

also dont forget that the shipping agent will charge a fee for processing the goods through customs. given you are importing a commercial quantity that might be more than you think.
