Lad in work has a daughter who works in Harvey Norman, He was telling me the amount of people that come in to the shop looking to get photos printed from Facebook downloads is unreal!
He told me she's refused to print images not belonging to the customers on numerous occasions (they even had photographers watermark on them)
    The Cheek of people!!

People will do anything to save a few quid.

Don't put photos up online is a simple solution though.

Genuine question: What's the problem with printing photos from Facebook? If you upload the photo you put it in the public domain don't you?

Are you for real? Simple answer is it's NOT ok to steal (download) other peoples photos and print them off as your own. In the same way it's NOT ok to steal statues, paintings, sculptures belonging to other artists that are in the public domain.

But it's OK to take photos of sculptures, statues etc when they're left out in public isn't it?

Anyway OP - what type of photos are we talking about? Selfies of their friends and that sort of thing or am I missing something?

Not sure really I'll have to get him to clarify, I should imagine it's nice Landscapes and such. Only today I was having a chat with my mother and a friend of hers whose daughter was admiring my photos on FB said to her she was going to get one of them printed without my permission! As she's a friend of the family if she asked I would get it printed for her at cost but at least ask..
If she attempts to print it from facebook she'll be disappointed as there all low res images.

Funnily enough if someone uploads a video to YouTube and you take it and upload it to your own channel you could get booted from YouTube for stealing content.

    'Public domain' doesn't negate copyright

Is it the policy of Harvey Norman not to print, or is this an "employee initiative"?

Jesus! The discussion started around facebook pictures. The only photos I see much on facebook are young wans standing in front of a door in their house in their glad rags. Harvesting those "lookin gud hun" comments.

    I wouldn't think that they're worth having a mini-stroke over.

That says more about your Facebook friends than it does about the debate at hand methinks.

Perhaps you're right. I don't have any facebook friends posting gallery quality masterpiece photographs at sufficiently large file size that I can put them on a memory stick and go into Harvey Norman's to "steal". They are mostly in "lookin fab babe" league. Most of them don't even look all that fab.

You are aware that some people do post images on that site which do not fall into the "Look at me Look at me" category and instead have some artistic merit?

I know this is becoming rare these days when so many people seem to think they are the star of their own reality show, but it does occur.

When some of these images are posted on that vile site others think that it is their right to take that image and have it printed. The fact that they are taking it without consent may show that they are not very capable of understanding that what they are doing is wrong. They also do not understand why a low resolution file will not print into a poster size print to hang on their wall. They do try pointing at the screen and shouting "Enhance" as they know that works on CSI but seems faulty where they are, so then ask for assistance. This is where it may be explained to them that an 80Kb file taken from Facebook will not make a poster and that even if it did they are not allowed to print it.
