Was looking into buying a portable battery charger as a just in case thing as have already had two dead batteries, but my owners manual says not to jump start with quick chargers.
What is a quick charger exactly?

    What car is it for?

Quick charge means you push more amps faster into the battery than on a regular charge.

Two dead batteries means you are either fitting secondhand batteries or you have a parasitic drain that is flattening them.
I would find out what is causing the batteries to die before investing in a charger although a charger is a very handy thing to have.
Good batteries have a warranty that will last for a year at least but better ones are much longer.

Some chargers have a start function where they enable a lot of current to be passed through the starter and this is probably what your manual is referring to.

Charger considered as "normal" would give much lower current during charge. Very briefly speaking - for batteries lifespan is much better to be charged with low current, but it takes much more time, obviously. The likes of 1/10 of average battery's capacity (4-6 A) is "normal". Quick chargers do the same job quicker giving higher current, but it's still insufficient for jump start - typical starter motor can take 200-600 A.

I have a Ring fast and slow charger unit.

Wasn't the cheapest but its brought many a battery back to life.
