Ive always been so embarrassed by my awfully crooked teeth and have honestly never seen anyone with teeth as bad as mine! It has affected my confidence immensely and now aged 48 Ive made a decision that I want the front 4 top ones out and get a really good denture

Can someone advise me on my best route on this thanks, I definitely don't want a brace or implants as cost is a major issue, I just want this sorted and get on with my life

Having out otherwise healthy teeth to be replaced by a removable denture is never a good idea, costs or otherwise. A denture is a torment and the space issue that have your teeth crooked may not be fixed. I would have a consultation with your dentist and see your good options. Braces are spread over a long period of time, and doing something correctly is never a waste of money.

Talk to people who wear dentures themselves already, as many people as you can. Guaranteed the vast majority will tell you they'd trade the denture in a heartbeat to have their own natural teeth back. Even the "best" denture will trap food, need to be washed after every meal, need to be left out of your mouth at nighttime, not to mention the constant worry of losing/breaking/been seen without them (eg: leaving the house in a rush at nighttime for an emergency or urgent hospital visit, house fire, ect-& forgetting your denture). Avoiding certain foods. Lisping. Having your palate covered. Replacing the denture every 5 or 10 years with a new set.....
The best analogy I've heard is that it's like having your own leg replaced with a wooden leg (a titanium implant is considered a slight upgrade- prosthetic leg!). Like, of course you can walk on it& use it- but at the end of the day it's still a wooden leg. So if ,besides being very crooked, your teeth & gums are in otherwise good condition, definitely keep them! You've another 40 odd years of living ahead.
Orthodontic treatment - cost is spread put over the course of treatment, usually 2-3yrs. Even to save up, €3 a day will save you €1k+ in a year....

Am I correct in thinking that I heard/read that dentures (not being rooted in bone) accelerate bone recession and that aged protruding chin puckered mouth look?
And if the bone recedes under dentures then going back to getting implants is a much bigger job with bone grafts etc?

OP talk to your dentist first, they must have patients receiving orthodontic care and could give you a rough estimate of what kind of work is needed and point you in the direction of a good local one.
An assessment with an orthodontist includes xrays, moulds, photographs and measurements. Usually about €150. A look and a chat would be much less.
