I have a Philips smart tv. There's some kind of ariiel on my chimney, can I run a cable from that and get RTE on the tv? Need it for the match tonight. Any way I can get it without saorview?

Rte is digital now, no more analogue so I doubt it.

More than likely your TV is capable of receiving Saorview.

If the aerial is the right type (for UHF broadcast, rather than say MMDS 'wireless cable'), & up to the job, you should be able to get the Saorview channels.

How would I know if it's right Ariel? Tv is capable of saorview but I thought that required a dish..

2 ariels on roof, one is a square mesh type and other is the typical fork shape one

Plug the aerial into the TV, & run a scan for terrestrial/aerial/air, or whatever.

A mesh type aerial could be a wideband UHF 'grid' type, or could be MMDS, & the other could be UHF or VHF.

Hopefully at least one is for UHF, & is pointing at a Saorview transmitter.

It's not pointing at anything just kind of lying onthe roof by the chimney. I'll plug it in and see. Chances are slim id say. I remember the days I could get it with a clotheshanger :(

The bottom one might work, the top one won't.

Ok thanks, last question and appreciate the help. The saorview site says I should point the Ariel north twards Maghera. So which part of that Ariel should point north?

The lower aerial is a Band3 VHF used for analogue RTE1 & 2 up to the end of 2012, defunct now. Saorview broadcasts in the UHF band, so that aerial may be hit or miss for Saorview.

The upper MMDS is also defunct since the service was shut down early last year.

    Narrow end towards the transmitter.
