Hi folks, this morning my 05 diesel avensis started on the second attempt, i revved it up and then it went dead and when i tried it after that there wasnt a kick out of it, i tried to tow it and nothing. It was getting hard to start over the past few weeks in the morning and was fine when it got warmed up but this morning no chance would it start, any idea what the issue might be?

    Check battery using a voltmeter
If you don't have one try swapping with a known working battery

Then (If engine is turning over ok) think about changing the diesel filter.

    Now I am confused.
Can you be more specific on what happened and when?

brought it into a mechanic and he said the engine has locked up, might be the timing chain or something

Those engines are belt driven. If belt snapped, your engine is junk.

No timing chain on an 05 Avensis. Belt though, did your mechanic say "chain" to you?
Is there oil in the sump?
You will buy an 05 Avensis for not much more than 1000 euro, so don't let your mechanic start on some engine swop/ rebuild project costing more than the car is worth.

sorry i think he did say belt and in fairness to him he said its not worth trying to fix, i'm not sure about oil in the sump, what would cause the belt to go?

Not connected, but a good indication of a lack of routine maintenance.
Go over to the "bangernomics" thread and see what interesting cars you can get under 2k.

You did not answer my question above.
in short, did changing battery help?
Are you sure battery was really changed?

If car makes no noise at all when you turn key - def battery. If this is the case, try jumping it with another car.

no the mechanic looked at it, tested the battery and said it was the timing belt and the engine locked up

Ok, I think perhaps you should get another mechanic to have a look.
    A second opinion never hurts.

Is car sitting on the driveway now or at a garage?

Lexus IS diesel is an engine made of chocolate
