Sorry if this is done to death!?
I've searched and I can only find a thread from 5 years ago.
Is there a new definitive way to add an extra battery so that it's only running dash cams and maybe some other add ons?
Left mine on by mistake last night, cold night didn't help, anyway battery was dead..

Clarified title it is for extras, not the car itself.

Yes, it can be done but is tricky as everything is now connected to main battery.

    What did you leave on?
    What car is it?

I'd say if you ask in the Campervan section, https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=884, they'd be able to help you.....

What input voltage does your camera need? If it can be made to run with 5V DC I would be very tempted running the camera from a large USB power bank and then charge the power bank from a switched 12V accessory/cig socket. That would be a very light and easy installation.

But yea, there are loads of wiring instructions for a split charge relay on Google. It's not rocket surgery. You'll need pretty beefy relay (a solid state relay would be preferable but a 100A rated normal one would do in most cases) as a depleted 12 V secondary lead battery can take surprisingly large current immediately after the relay closes.

My power bank turns off after 10 seconds if the current drawn is less than a preset - I think mine is 50mA. It should work if the camera and other currents draw more.

If you're going the wiring route, why not put the power for the cam on the switched 12v instead of the permanent live?

I left 2 dash cams on front and rear. Obviously for extras.
Yes I know it's difficult, wondering is there a new easy 2017 solution...

Been using dash cams years now..
And I have never wired or nor would I wire them to ignition...
I know some people do(that's cool)
    I prefer permanent constant +.
The car is well able to handle normal driving and parking up..
Always turn them off when in bed or at work.
I use my car for work, so only ever turn them off when I'm sleeping.
