Decided on an suv but petrol or diesel?

So after some shopping around have settled on either a VW Tiguan or the new karoq, once I see it in the flesh next month.

However I am now torn between diesel and petrol. I currently drive a 1.6 focus 115bhp which has plenty of power for my needs.

The Tiguan comfortline only comes in 2.0tdi and is still 116bhp.
The new karoq will have a choice of petrol or diesel.
My current thinking is the 1.6 diesel karoq.
I am interested in the 1.0 petrol but I haven't been able to test drive one and the skids dealer is only getting 1 in for test drive and he thinks it will be the 2.0 diesel.

Would the 1.0 petrol be big enough for the karoq in comparison to the 1.6 tdi?

My mileage is a 25km commute, a few runs during the week for work of 40km max and maybe 100-150 the odd weekend. My current car clocks up around 20-22k in a year.

I'd suggest trying the 1.5 petrol Karoq. The 1 litre will be fine but if you put down your foot mpg will suffer significantly

I would get the diesel, as long as there isn’t too much of a price premium - much as it’s fashionable to slate diesel.

But we now know that criticism of diesel is entirely justifed. No fad, whim or fashion involved.

I'd suspect that a 25km commute does not justify a diesel. But I'll be interested to read more expert views.

I'd say the mileage justifies diesel. Be interested to see the price difference between the 1.6 diesel and 1.5 petrol if any

The diesel is around €600 more than the 1.5 petrol. About €1400 more than the 1.0petrol.

1400 is a fair bit of petrol but 600 isn't a huge difference.

I like the 1.5 too but was worried it might be thirsty .

I have been lucky with my current car with no dpf or other diesel related issues.

Is the 600 more for the 1.6 diesel or 2.0?

From the priceless looks like 2.0 only available in 4 wheel drive ?

The 1.5 tsi 150bhp is around 600 more than the 1.6tdi.
The 1.6 tdi is 1400 more than the 1.0tsi.
looking at the list I got

Yes the 2.0 is 4x4 but that doesn't interest me.

I'd much prefer the 1.0tsi but might regret it if it's too underpowered for the size of car, even though it's the same bhp as the 1.6tdi.

If its a choice between the 1.6 diesel and 1.5 petrol I would definitely go with the 1.5

The Karoq is the better car as it makes the interior in both the Tiguan and Ateca look old. The Karoq is the newest and has the best dash and ride of the three cars.
The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is well worth checking out as well before deciding. Its comes with a 1.5 petrol engine no diesel untill the summer do. I think its a like it or loath it car. I think it looks great.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

That's the way I'm leaning but I'm useless at working out the figures regarding fuel etc.

I don't want to be running to the garage every other day for petrol after driving a very economical diesel for 5 years.

Your probably getting high 50s early 60s mpg out of the focus. I'd reckon the petrol 1.5 will realistically do around 50 mpg. So you are probably looking at 15% more fuel a month which will cost about 10% more than diesel. So if you spending 70 euro a month on diesel. Your probably looking at around 85 to 90 euro per month on petrol.

The plus is you are getting 35 more bhp.. it's.pretty tricky to get more power without burning more fuel. What value do you place on a more enjoyable driving experience and smoother / quieter petrol engine performance.

My figures are rough but I'd say they are ballpark.

    Cheers,
    Mick

To be fair it's a close call. There is a move to petrol and electric but diesel still reigns supreme. The diesel makes sense and financially you should be ok for 3 to 5 years before legislation starts to affect anyone. That said for financial security I'd move to petrol to ensure in 5 years my vehicle was sellable. Unless you intend to keep and avail of a scrappage scheme when 10 years old.
