so the scenario is my Dad is looking to change his car spotted a second had one in a main dealer at 15950, then a week later seen "due to massive used car sale now reduced from 15950 to 13750" so he jumped at it however the dealer states that the 13750 figure is strictly a cash only deal and if trading the 15950 figure stands, is this even allowed no where on the advert online does it even state this

Where is it advertised? Online website or dealer's own website or newspaper or what?

Very common to have a cash and trade in price with car sales.

Being in the motor trade myself, I deal with automatic japanese cars. It all depends on the value of your trade in. For instance, I will always allow more for a trade in that I will get back in the trade! For instance I have a trader who will underwrite my trade ins, If he is willing to give me say E4000 for your car, it is not unrealistic to say I would allow you E4500.

How much do you think your dads car is worth?
Make, model, year and you will get a good idea.

It never used to be but it's becoming increasingly popular for cars to be advertised with both straight sale and trade in prices listed.

It does seem like a new way to try and cod you, I would have less trust in someone advertising this way but that's just me, it may be unfounded.

I suppose it gets cars into lower price brackets on search engines too, because funnily enough the cars are always advertised at the lower straight sale price, never the higher trade in accepted price, despite the vast majority of deals being done with trade ins.

There's nothing strictly wrong with it I suppose bar it being a pain in the neck.

I wonder what happens if you have a very desirable car to trade in ? surely some makes/ models in great condition are in demand and dealers sure be delighted to take as trade ins ?

Your trade in is never desirable and the car that they are selling is always in high demand. If you want the value of your car sell it privately and buy with cash. If you trade in you'll never get the value as there will be at least one company that has to make a profit and possibly more.

    Not true!

if you have say a high spec golf GTD - most dealers would love to resell - giving straight sale discounts always assumes your trade in is undesirable.
main dealers get a lot of good used cars from loyal customers - if everyone was buying with cash - they would be short of stock.

I love the two word response. How about elaborating because the more middle men involved and the less it will be worth for you.

you can have as many prices as you want, the only one with a bearing is the agreed price paid.

Il give you a for instance! An 08 Nissan Primera, Automatic, 220km, Nct March 2018, no tax. What would you value that car for? I took one as a trade in Early last week. You value it for me and then I will tell you what I allowed for it off a 2014 Toyota Prius Estate.

You need to tell us the price of the Prius? Because if your looking for 24k for the prius you can give 5k for the Primera! The price you give for the Primera is dependent on what price and margin the Prius is and you know that. What price is the prius?

2014/2 Prius Estate €16950 profit margin is irrelevant to you though!

A dealer might sell the Primera for 2500-3000 with it been an automatic. If your selling it on to another lad that takes your trade in I don't think he will give you more than 1200 for it. What you give for the Primera and what you really give is a different story! Am I way out? So I reckon you gave them 1850 on the trade in.

The cheapest one on the net is €2200. It was an extremely rough car that I sold in the trade for €800. I allowed €2250. They bought the car for €14700.

Dya think everyone is a winner in that scenario?

In fairness the person that got rid of there Primera was I'm sure happy and that is what it's all about. You have to make a profit and usually people trading in cars think there worth more than they are actually worth. Having not seen the car I don't know what the Primera could have fetched privately. I know I wouldn't like to have to sell it privately.

I'm not a trader but I follow car prices and older cars are not shifting. How much would you have given on a 08 corolla (red in colour) d4d 1.4 2year nct, 3 months tax 235k one owner on the trade in? And how much would it sell to the trade for and privately? If that's too much to divulge I understand.
I went to buy that exact car in March in a private sale. It was up for 5500 after some negotiation I bought it for 3k. 3 weeks later I bought the same car in a private sale but 2007 167k for 3500 for my auntie. Car had been up for 4900.

I see 06 corollas on for 4k to 4.5k. People are away with the fairies!!

A good diesel hatchback in luna spec will fetch 4k no problem. Not a petrol one though.

I would probably allow you somewhere in the region of €3-4K against say a 14 Prius.
