Looking for a laptop for my daughter (age 10) for Christmas and was looking at this HP in Currys.ie. i3-7100u processor, 4gb RAM, 1tb HD , Full HD 15.6" screen.

It is 419euro now. Would I be likely to do much better on Black Friday? I'm not bothered about going for an SSD etc. Just something "functional/reliable" around that price.

Comes in a range of colours:

It's an excellent price for an in-store laptop with those specs. You wouldn't really get it cheaper online even. I'd be inclined to say get it before it's gone rather than wait for a better deal that likely won't come along.

    +1

Full HD display, modern i3 processor, long battery life. For that money you just can't go wrong. It does have only 4GB of RAM but this can be upgraded later.

I had a look at 1 of these in a Currys store last night. I may yet purchase one but am going to hold off for a few days to see if anything better appears. Build quality was basic/light which is to be expected for that price. The store I was in had 30+ in stock of each of the 2 colours I checked. I'll keep an eye on their stocks.

Bargain of the year for a retail store and you're holding out for better? It simply won't happen, Currys are clearing them out hence the price. You wouldn't even get it online for that price let alone a walk in store.

You're probably right. :) I'll keep an eye on stocks for a few days and will pull the trigger if they start getting dangerously low. I'm in the North the day after Black Friday - I'd get this for below 388eur at current Revolut rate if they're still in stock there also.

would imagine that they would be sold out by the end of next week tbh

Picked mine up last night in Navan. Just did a quick setup so can't really comment on it yet but I'm pleased with the build of it - wasn't expecting much but it's actually quite nice.

    Thanks OP.

Nothing definitive on the specs I found online. The exact model isnt appearing on crucial memory site either which is normally good for checks. When I checked the underside of the laptop, it appeared all of the cover would have to be removed for upgrades - warranty issue?

Re: stocks. Was 108 available in my local store at lunchtime yesterday across the 4 colours. Checking this morning shows only 3 sold since. My next nearest store only has stocks in the single figures so be careful waiting if you definitely need this.

it's definitely up-gradable for ram - the main question would be how many ram slots it has.
if it only has one then it's more expensive to do so as you'd have to buy a 1x8gb stick. (60€+)
if it has two then you can get a cheaper 1x4gb stick to add in. (30€ )

Hi - stupid question - is it just a matter of buying any 4gb stick and plugging it in?

No. Various types, sizes, speeds. Safest would be check label of what you have before update. From spec (https://support.hp.com/ie-en/document/c05812765) I found online it appears to be DDR4-2133 SDRAM installed.

You will have to take apart the laptop to some degree. Back in the old days there would simply be a couple of screws and a panel to remove for upgrading the RAM. But laptops these days can be a lot trickier. It depends on the machine though, I can't find much info on this model. It would be reasonable to expect to have to remove the bottom half of the case, still just a bunch of screws and some prying to remove. But a bit tricky. Sometimes you would need to remove the keyboard to access the RAM slots.

Does this normally impact warranty when full case has to be removed?

Looks handy - just back cover off to get at memory. Wonder if any seals are broken in the process. Covered in section "Removal and replacement procedures for Authorized Service Provider parts" .

Would this laptop be suitable for music software?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 692 ✭✭✭jinkybhoy

    Hi

I'm having an issue with the laptop that after login screen it's going black for about 10 minutes then desktop appears.

I've tried a few fixes such as regedit "EnableUlps set it to 0" - There is no such file as there is only 1 graphics card.

    When I looked in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

which is where the registry entry is meant to be, I see a load of files such as

    @BatmanAC.exe, @Dishonored.exe, @BF3.exe etc

I haven't installed any games on this laptop - does this mean its a refurbished one that's been sold to me as new??

Stocks of these are still ok judging by count in my local store. Was 98 in stock on Friday evening and still 82 remaining this morning. Silver ones are almost out of stock in same store. Stocks of Red have actually increased since Friday.

Brought mine back and they couldn't explain why there was old files on it - they just gave me a new one and it's working fine.

Looking for a cheap-ish decent laptop, mainly used for running programmes when I'm training on the bike and a bit of listening to music and watching netflix, Does anyone know how this laptop would handle this programme?

    OS: Windows 7 x64 bit, OSX 10.8
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4GB
Graphics: 1GB dedicated GPU, or embedded Intel HD 4000/AMD R5
Hard Drive: 4GB of free space

Minimum system requirements I'd need to run this, probably the heaviest I'd be running. Probably the graphics card where it would be short?

would handle it ok I think. intel hd 4000 is an old standard. this laptop has better than that. ram COULD be an issue but I imagine it would do ok

What's normal warranty on these HPs? Is it return to manufacturer or retailer. Am in NI later in week and would get this for 20+ euro cheaper but wondering if it is worth the hassle.

Manufacturer is far the best way to deal with HP, they'll do a pick up and return at their own cost via DPD next-day and have very quick turnaround times, far quicker than going through the store.

    - Both UK and Ireland warranty work is done by Flextronics in the UK. They collected my Spectre on a Monday and I had it back on the Friday, they even gave it a good clean internally and externally.

So a purchase in NI, that is registered in South will be collected from down here if there is an issue?

Mine was bought from the UK but delivered to ROI when I bought it so I don't know if that made a difference at all to be honest.

Mine has been with HP twice, once as I broke the keyboard due to liquid damage so I had to pay for a non warranty repair which was turned around in 6 days and the second time was for an (exceptionally rare) CPU fault that was the time I mentioned.

Both times it was no problem. In any case, the tracking number I was given by HP for the collection and return was tracked on the UK site of DPD so I reckon the whole of UK and Ireland goes through the UK procedure anyway since it's going to go straight to Flextronics without touching HP themselves.

The whole thing was surprisingly straightforward and easy to track. I thought it would be a lot of trouble but really it wasn't.
