If you book a double room in a hotel but get two single beds pushed together, do you have a genuine reason to complain?

Are they locked together with one double sheet over them? That's pretty standard.

Is it ireland or another country? In Spain we figured out a doble often meant twin and we had to ask for matrimonial.

Locked together with one double sheet. Pretty standard so. Not as nice as one double bed. Pretty expensive hotel, so would have expected a little better.

Change the orientation of the mattresses. So both going width-ways across the two bed bases. Much more comfortable, and no chance of falling in the gap.

Given that this is the case most of the times, I don't think you can complain. Maybe try to request a real double bed when booking or inquire about it before booking.

This can be a bit hit and miss. I don't think you will get a refund or discount.

Yeah, this is pretty standard. As said above, they often orient the beds sideways and then stick a padded mattress protector over it, so you're not even aware that it's two beds. They're supposed to interlock anyway to prevent someone from falling between them.
