Lets say your NCT expires on the 2/8/18. I would try and get a date for roughly April. So if you did your NCT on the 14/04/18. Your new disc would be valid until 14/04/20.
It has to be done 90 days in advance of the due date but there's no point of doing it to soon. Just make sure you've factored in getting repairs if you need a retest.
    I hope that makes sense.

To get one more 2 year NCT, your car needs to pass an NCT 3 months or more before your current disc expires.

I got a letter from the NCTS saying that my NCT is due in March 2018 if I get it done by the 3rd December I will get an extra year. Booked in for this Thursday so I can fix any issues, which hopefully there won't be.

+1 they wrote to me twice. Like you, I left a buffer of a couple of weeks which in my case I needed to get a ball joint fixed - failed first time. All done now, got my final two year cert. to Oct 2019.
