Hey guys.. asking for a friend, so im not sure of the technical terms...

basically, his linux box/nas storage got wiped, or overridden by a copy of his windows OS, I THINK?

bu the solution we are looking for is, how do we get the info which was on the box back, not just reinstall the linux,, but retrieve the info that was originally there?

can anyone here either do it, or recommend someone who can ?

not looking for a freebie here by the way,,, payment is waiting

    thank you

If the data has been actually overwritten then it cannot be retrieved by any means.

If the partition table has been altered or corrupted, then the original partition table should be able to be reinstated and hopefully the remaining data (not overwritten) will become accessible.

testdisk and photorec would be the two Linux packages/applications that would be used here for such recovery.

First rule ......... disconnect the HDD and do not power it up until put into a recovery system by someone who knows what they are doing.

Make sure the drive is taken out ..... even simple examination can cause more data loss.

No one can say whether or not they would be successful at data recovery without examining the drive.

If the data is important, then the first thing to be done is to mirror the drive to a backup drive, and do the recovery on the backup, preserving the original.

If the data is not irreplaceable then the original could be worked on, by someone familiar with drive structure and partitioning.
