Christmas ads bigger than the programmes

When did this ultimate inversion of the point of television come about? 3-4 years ago ? What the hell happened ? Are John Lewis to blame ?

Christmas TV programmes used to matter to people once upon a time. We understood that the big movies, the specials, the seasonal episodes of talk shows or series, were a treat there to entertain us. Getting the magazine guide was almost an event. Sure, the multitude of channels, the online feeds, the buy any movie or series, record and watch whenever suits you thing is great. But how the hell did adds being an event in themselves, bigger than the supposed main course they puncture intermittently, become a thing ?
Now no one watches the content, and its all about the fecking adds !
Maybe I just woke up in a dark matter universe.
The advertising industry must think they are omnipotent masters of the universe for having pulled off this alchemy.
