Customer facing staff with poor English

I’m here in a Subway restaurant having a roll with the OH.

The woman who served me sounds like she’s from Eastern Europe.

I had to repeat my order three times (the third time I was speaking slower than a tortoise).

The knife was strewn with residue from God-knows-what. I asked her to wipe the knife before cutting. I had to repeat this three times.

Eventually she said ... ahhh of course. Cut in half yes. Before I could correct her she sliced through the roll leaving mayo and tuna and god knows what else in my roll.

Are these people not assessed on their language skills before being placed in the job?

    I’ll be making a complaint.

Huge problem in Cork. And that not even including foreigners.

I've worked with a lot of different nationalities and the people who complain about not being able to understand them are usually just a bit thick or their manner of speaking is a bit more difficult than 90% of other people or like my own mother and refuse to try. She can't even understand people from Offaly!

When you're standing behind a counter and see your colleague serving 150 customers with no problems and then they have a problem with one, it's pretty easy to see who the problem is with.

It is very annoyin dealing with someone wegocentric understand you

I'm reminded of a local store that hired the bosses new brother in law. He was born and bread from west cork or Kerry
Nobody could talk to him. It was a really fast blur when he talked. The boss was used to him and could understand. It was chaos until he was moved into the office

Sometimes people are so enraged by being served by a fordiner that they "can't undertand". Sometimes the workers English is shocking and a customer genuinely can't understand.

I think both of you have issues comprehending others, the OP said nothing about not being able to understand the woman, his problem was that she didn't understand him.

    Read it again!

It's not that easy to find people with fluent English to do menial jobs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,452 ✭✭✭✭The_Valeyard

    Listen,

We know the OP is a thread happy Kneemos,
But he is right this time!

When on the phone to customer service, usually somewhere in Asia. It is extremely difficult to understand whats been said. I hate it when they
Repeat back your name is that Alpha, Beta, Charlie, Delta way.

Also hate the pre-learned phrases they have to reassure or calm customers.

Working in Subway isn't a menial job, they are "Sandwich Artists" requiring extensive training.

They let the Healey Rays speak in the Dail. Google Translate doesn't have Healey Ray.

The person who came up with that title is certainly an Artist of sorts.

Not sure if the OP is a troll...comes across like a bad caricature .....he was on earlier about despising women...

It says a lot about the measure of a person who "complain" about staff in situations like this. Because they can.

It's usually the type of person who ends up eating in Subway, etc all their life.

Please feel free to quote me where I said I despise all women. Good girl.

Eat in subway my whole life? I usually cook at home. I’m the cook in the relationship :p

I have every right to complain if I am paying for a service and I’m not being understood.

Did you say good girl to the person on minimum wage serving you in Subway?

You got an extra portion of Tuna and were not even charged for it.

I was having a meatball roll. The tuna was unwelcome addition.

Can you answer my question? Are you able to quote me where I said I despise all women?

You obviously are unaware that fish is a common allergen and cross contamination should be avoided.

    It was a joke.

If you are concerned about cross contamination, it would be better to stay away from those deli type places. Same as the salad bars in supermarkets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75 ✭✭henrietta

The real issue here isn't language skills it's the dirty knife. And this is an issue across deli workers of all nationalities. I always tell then to clean the knife and rarely eat from delis for this reason. FGS how hard can it be to train staff to wipe the knife!!!!

The salad bars in supermarkets the same, the coleslaw spoon ends up in the nut salad and back again
