Is there a name for this kind of sellotape?

I'm looking for the kind of sellotape that you can tear easily your fingers. It's usually sort of white in appearance... you can't quite see through it. I think you can also write on it with pen, in case you needed to stick things on pages in your copy, that you could always write over it.

Is there a name for this kind of sellotape?

No, definitely "Scotch" tape or "Magic" tape. It is also more resistant to UV degradation.

I don't think that's it. I'll try for the scotch tape though.

I'm thinking in the context of an office. Perhaps this wasn't really the right place to post

Scotch is just the brand. Magic tape is the specific type. So you're looking for Scotch (or another brand of) magic tape!

Scotch tape the same as Sellotape; it's a brand that people call an item.

The white tape is called masking tape. The green version is called painters tape.

You are mad in the head if you think sellotape and Scotch tape are the same thing :D

Would it be a kind of washi tape? You can write easily on it as its paper based but usually very decorative...

It's not masking tape, which is paper-based and used for marking off painting areas etc.

What you're looking for is Scotch Magic Tape (or an equivalent version)

+1 They are the same thing. In this part of the world we use the term 'sellotape' (regardless of brand) to mean transparent sticky tape. In the US that type of tape is generically known as 'scotch tape' though technically both of them are registered trade marks.

Sellotape was originally a British company, it's now owned by Henkel. Scotch Tape is a brand owned by the 3M company in the US.

As with 'hoover', both of them have become generic terms for a class of product.

Not commenting on masking or magic tape, just the basic terms sellotape and scotch tape.

So you are telling me Americans call Sellotape Scotch tape? And they call Scotch tape magic tape? My mind has been blown.

    Yes.
And they call Scotch tape magic tape? My mind has been blown.

No, they call magic tape 'scotch tape'. Read the Wikipedia article you provided a link to earlier ....

Magic Tape, also known as Magic Transparent Tape, is a brand within the Scotch Tape family of adhesive tapes made by 3M, sold in distinctive plaid packaging.

Invented and introduced in 1961, it is the original matte finish tape. It appears frosty on the roll, yet is invisible on paper. This quality makes it popular for gift-wrapping

3M sells several different tapes under the 'Scotch Tape' brand, the one that is the same as our sellotape is called 'Magic Tape'.

But in everyday language in the US, when someone talks about 'scotch tape' they mean the transparent adhesive tape used to repair torn documents and to seal gifts wrapped in fancy paper i.e. sellotape.
