Bought myself a new second hand car today, tax is out. I know I can't tax it until change of ownership has been processed but can I change over my insurance anyway, even though there's probably not much point until tax is all sorted??

Of course you can change over your insurance.

when doing tax online, you'll be asked anyway for your insurance details. The assumption is that you insure the car from pretty much the moment you buy it.

Lots of people will drive a car without tax disk (while in this limbo situation) but with insurance already sorted. If you get stopped by Gardai in that situation, by the letter of law you're offside, but probably will be OK if you have some supporting docs with you.

However, I wouldn't dream of bringing a car on the road without insurance. If you get stopped, it's very serious. If you are unlucky enough to have an accident, then it's a real disaster.

The one obstacle you might hit would be if there's no NCT. My insurance wanted to get a scan/copy of the NCT disk when processing insurance. However, previous insurance companies didn't ask for it (but should check is it a condition of cover, just because they don't ask for it doesn't mean they've not put the condition in the small print and could use it to invalidate a policy later if you'd breached...

Yeah I actually completely forgot about providing insurance details when renewing tax on a car.

Transferred over the insurance earlier this morning so just have to wait to tax it now.

NCT is good til end of next year so not problem there. Prob won't risk on the road until tax is sorted.

    Cheers for the help guys
