Query regarding broken throttle body

    Hey,

Hoping this is the right place to ask, if not please direct me to the right place.

Bit of background, I had my car serviced 3 weeks ago (Last service before warranty was up). After the service my electrics were messing up, lights randomly going off and on along with the A/C blowing only cold air. I brought it back and they fixed the electrics, said it was something to do with static. Unfortunately the A/C kept blowing cold air. Because the car was still running they booked it in, as opposed to emergency service. While waiting the week and a half for the booking, my high coolant light started flashing and the car just died, went completely limp and had loads of warning lights on the dashboard. The towing guy said it looked like they forgot to put something back correctly after the service.

So after bringing it back, I'm being told that the Throttle Body is broken and its totally coincidental and nothing to do with the service. The warranty is just up now so I'm being asked to pay for this repair (1k+). So my query is, does this seem like a coincidence or would it be possible for that damage to come from a mistake during servicing?

    Thanks

What car is it and what is included for 1k+

Do you mean a sensor as in TPS which can be on the accelerator and the throttle body.?

    Static is a strange excuse

    Year and model might help

Sorry I should have included in the original post. Its a 2015 Mazda 3.

I'm not very knowledgeable about this, I only really know the basics of cars. All I'm being told is the throttle body needs a full replacement and cost including labor is looking to be slightly over 1k.

The static excuse for the electrics I did find odd, but all the electrics except the A/C worked after so I didn't question it.

    Thanks for the replies

The throttle body is just that, a body of precast metal or hard thermoplastic with a butterfly valve housed inside.Very tough.

Attached to most are electrical sensors to measure accelerator position, airflow, temperature and vacum hoses. The butterfly inside is operated by a cable or on newer cars a small motor that turns it thus allowing more air in and the sensors match the airflow with fuel.

The body itself would only need to be replaced if it was physically hammered.

The sensors are replaceable or should be anyway but cost nothing close to 1000....150 fitted is where I'm at.

Car fine, car serviced, car acting wierd, car broke

Ask what exactly is broke and how it happened. It is not a wear and tear item on a 2 year old car.

Throttle bodies are now generally an all in one unit with sensors built in, with no replaceable or serviceable parts, its been that way for many years now on most engines. They are also electronic and the position has no direct link to the pedal, they often go wrong.

I had a look there , it looks like your throttle body is all one unit with rivets instead of screws. Its 450 quid part new from Mazda.

How long after the service were the electrics messing around.I'd be looking for goodwill if warranty is just out.

Thanks for the replies. All this started straight after the service, it was totally fine up until then. I had a big service and got everything on offer as it was the last one within the warranty. The electrics and A/C were immediate and I was asked to monitor it for 2-3 days before bringing it back in.

I did ask about goodwill, but it had to be towed to a different dealers than my usual one and I'm being told that one of my previous services wasn't entered into the system so they won't give it to me based on that. I haven't been able to get in contact with the dealers where I got it serviced after ringing all day but I'll try again tomorrow. I don't have receipts because the service they say I'm missing is from very early this year so they are possibly thrown out (We also moved house within that time). So for now I'm anticipating a struggle with getting the service/goodwill sorted and before I have to fork over 1k+ on a repair I'm looking to know if they could have caused the issue in the service or if it is, as they say, a coincidence. The dealer knows I have a pretty long commute to work and can't be without my car :(

    Thanks again

There is coincidence and then there is being messed about.

You mention immediately after the service, and it was noted. They inspected and fixed the electrics and told you it was static but left you without a/c.It progressively got worse , lit up your dash and fried your throttle body. They admitted to forgetting to enter your warranty required service record.

Your warranty is just out by a few weeks.Ive seen and read about goodwill and public image stories from Mazda over the past year or 2.

It appears you bought this new and possibly on a finance deal.I know it's easy for me to say but in a nice polite but concerned manner contact Mazda Ireland for goodwill.I would.

It is almost impossible for the service to have had anything to do with this but the car is so new id be looking for it fixed for free and nothing less.

Contact mazda ireland , the service interval must have been reset by mazda when they do your services. They must have a record of it being booked in.
    Go to Mazda Ireland direct.

    Thanks for the help guys.

So I contacted Mazda and they said they might deduct a percentage for goodwill. The throttle body got replaced and was taken for a test drive, the driver noticed it is still only blowing cold air so they had another look and said they had no idea what the issue is and have escalated to Mazda support for advice.

Looks like I might be without my car for a while :(
