Anyone know why my dog keeps ripping up the bedding in his kennel?
He's a six year old King Charles. Every time I put in a new bed he rips it up.
He's only outside for a few hours a day as he sleeps in the back hall at night.

My first thought with something like this is always: boredom. What's his walking routine? Does he have toys that he's allowed to chew on? A kong stuffed with food and frozen could keep him busy, tire him out, and satisfy his need to chew all at once.

He's bored/frustrated. If it wasn't the bedding it'd be something else. Just needs more exercise and playtime. Kong is super, another one is The Running Egg, can highly recommend it. Although out for a walk with his master to sniff and do dog things is always preferable.

It's after he comes back from good long walks that he does it. He gets out twice a day. I will try some of those toys though as all he has is a rubber bone. Thanks.

Try new toys and bones. What's the bed made from?
    He might like something different:p

It's one of those doggy mattress things you buy in pet shops.

I have a dog who had a very strict bedtime ritual whereby she would scratch and scratch and scratch and turn around a few times before lying down. She would shred it with her teeth to fluff it up here and there too.

Had to get her out of that or we'd have the dog beds and couch ruined. She loves carefully and methodically ripping apart cloth and preferably removing any fluff that is inside it, but she knows she is not allowed do it any more, so she just shreds her toys. Just adding it may not only be boredom.

I used to use old duvets for the dogs beds but they get shredded. Now I use blankets and they hardly touch them. Does seem to be related to the material. The odd blanket will get holes chewed in when the others are ignored ( dogs have 4 or more blankets each) but the mess in nothing like that from a shredded duvet.

Give him an old blanket, old beach towel or one of them good for nothing throws or nothing atall.
Dont be waisting money on doggy matress from pet stores. These are only a novelties to get people to empty their walets, so everybody knows they love their dog.
We've had dogs for years, very happy dogs and they slept on a blanket or an old towel and if you were taking the dog, you took the blanket so they knew where to lie down.

Be careful of the mattress too.. I have two cheap ones that cost a tenner that lots of the pet shops sell. No shredding issues here but I saw a post on a UK FB page where a pup had shredded the same kind - it was filled with what looked like strips of material and he managed to get wrapped up and strangled himself. :(

Mines the same. its her blanket or nothing. i think i paid 9 euro for it in lidl. you could spend 100 euro on one and she would turn her nose up at it.

When mine was a pupper she used to take them out of her bed during the day...i got my house painted a few years back and the poor painter had awful trouble...she would take his sheets into the middle of the garden and then lie on them so he couldnt take them back.

    dogs are great :)
