    Hi,

I have an issue with my Vodafone modem / router that is drops Wifi speed intermittently requiring me switch on and off at the plug and then wait a few minutes until all is connected again.

Is it easy to replace it with a higher quality model and would anyone have any recommendations? Looking for something that wont drop requiring me to kill the power and maybe has better range than the one Vodafone issue (for better signal in upstairs bedroom) and wont have issues with a number of devices connected to it (eg phones, smart plugs, smart TV).

This is the one I currently have:

AVM Fritz!Box 7560 ... which is supplied by various other providers.

Just Eir and Vodafone seem to like Huawei so much ...

The question is: do you have broadband only or also phone service ? Is it analogue phone or VoIP, if so ?

I have broadband only no phone. Is it a simple case of swapping them out and logging into the WiFi with SSO id and password of the new box? Where can I purchase one? Any other better modems easy to get and set up I'm open to options.

Well, the first thing you need is the settings. So typically Vlan10, the username and the password of the PPPoE session. I've managed to get the settings from Vodafone in the past, but that was for a business connection. Dunno if they're as easy going handing those settings out for residential.

For the router, what do you have ? VDSL/FTTC or FTTH ?

I believe it's FTTH. Are these Vodafone modems known to be poor? Is swapping out the modem the best option to have stronger and more consistent WiFi throughout the house? Guessing if they don't give those settings it could be a pain

If it's FTTH, then the username is the serial-no of your router (S3G7.......) and the password is the password programmed in the ONT.

For FTTH you'll need a Fritz!Box 7560 at the minimum or a router that has enough CPU power to handle the connection and supports VLANs on the WAN port.

And those Huawei routers are muck ... both when it comes to reliability and wireless.

These guys are the distributor for them in Ireland: http://www.euroroute.ie/new-fritzbox-7560/
They can probably point you to a retailer.

When you say password is programmed in the ONT what does that mean and how is it retrieved? Thanks. Anywhere those modems can be bought?

I got the installer to give me the password during the install. So .. I guess you've got to ask vodafone. Tell them you want it for your own records in case the router goes tits up.

As for the router, I edited my post above with a link to the distributor. Talk to them, they should be able to point you at a retailer.
