I always thought the point of Twitter was for celebrities to promote their latest film, album or whatever or for people to leave a link to their website. It already strayed from its original form when they allowed picture uploading. I think there were people complaining about that at first but it would never have caught on with the general public otherwise.

Lazy online 'newspapers' love it because they can write an article about how outraged the twitterverse is about something and fill it with retweets as opposed to actually having to write something. They'll love it even more now that they have longer tweets to fill up more space.

For those giving out about twitter, it's not just a celeb echo chamber! Well, it is if you follow vacuous idiots, but I use it for traffic alerts mostly.

Following the likes of LiveDrive, AA Roadwatch, Dublin Bus, Irish Rail, Luas, (etc.) updates it's handy to get information fast in case there are accidents / alternative routes.

It wont really make that much difference to me and how I use Twitter. I can say what I need to say in 142 characters.

280 may mean that people will spend twice the time reading one tweet and therefore see less tweets as a result.

I use Twitter for my work and I find it a great way for engaging with a large audience.
