Ford Focus 1.6tdci cutting out and ’jerky’

Hi all, wanted to get peoples help on this or to find out if anyone has had a similar experience.

My 05 focus has been giving a few problems lately, mainly when cold. I noticed first that there was a rip in the hose running from the turbo to the intercooler, the short ‘L-shaped one’. Oil was leaking and I thought it may have been causing the other problems (struggling to start and jerky when driving). I changed the hose but the other symptoms still remain.

The car sometimes (not every time) gets hard to start and only when u press the accelerator will it actually start up. It also has a tendency to either cut out while at idle or the revs will drop and then recover.

The other problem is that when driving the car can jerk out of nowhere. Glancing at the Rev counter when this happens, they drop and then recover. It’s gotten to a stage where it’s cut out while stopped in traffic but also while driving. It’ll usually take a couple of minutes (2/3) before it’ll start again.

Just to mention I recently had it serviced, less than 2k ago. Any advice is appreciated!

[update] started the car after work this evening and made it about 50 yards before it cut out. Couldn’t get it started after about 30 Mins of trying. Got a tow truck through the insurance, guy arrived and got it going using a bit of easy start spray into the air box.

First stop would be a diagnostic test and look for fault codes. While they give plenty of trouble they usually start. Check for fuel pressure 150 bar min
    Crank, cam sensor synchronisation
And engine turning over fast enough to start.
I've seen blocked fuel filters cause non starting issues a few times. They are quite costly and are often overlooked in services. If your filter doesn't look new I'd start there

    Take it to a garage

It needs to be plugged in and have faults read.

A faulty egr valve can cause the 1.6 diesel to cut out and get a bit jerky sometimes.
