New Stove or Central Heating

    Hi,

my parents live in an old cottage (solid walls) with a Stanley no.8 range that struggles to heat the rads so they want to get either a new solid fuel stove or an oil burner and tank,

the chimney would need an overhaul if they go the stove route so I'm wondering which would be the easiest to get in regarding plumbing, wiring etc etc

The thread title should have said New stove or Oil burner! Lol

    thanks.

    I’d sayt oil.
Don’t know what age or abilities they are but it’s only going one way for us all and in the event of older age and possibly poorer health the handiness of oil can’t be beat.

If you are thinking oil don't forget to look at a gas tank & gas boiler as a different option. We had similar choice a few years ago and went with gas and love it. Ended going with Calor Gas but had everything installed by our own plumber / gas installer.

Only 2 of us in house so we got a combi boiler which controls heat, gives pretty much instant hot water & also feeds gas range for cooking. No more need for immersion tank. The gas tank has a sensor and gets automatically filled up when starting to get close to empty. No more worrying about having oil siphoned away from tank, which happened to us while away during a cold spell & pipes in the house burst & flooded the place. Plus we do level play plan and pay a set amount every month so no big surprises of having to fill an oil tank up and paying in one go. Takes a lot of hassle away.

It is also an old house with a single heating zone so ended up getting a heating control system (Heat Genius) that allows us to control every radiator individually.

I’d stick with oil too. Found bulk gas one of the most expensive ways we’ve ever had to heat a house.

Have a friend that’s been using pellets for a few years now. Might be worth considering.

Where do they get fuel for the current Stanley? If it's cheap/ free (firewood, turf) and not much work (you or neighbour supplies) then that might suit them. But if an increasing hassle, then oil.
