NCT brake failure

Hello, can someone tell me what is wrong with my ford focus 02.
i had the car serviced about 2 months/ 3,000miles ago
i had new brake pads put in. these make a screeching noise when stopping.

i got the nct cert back and the car failed on the brake performance:
    is this the handbrake?
Parking Brake 0.730kN (nearside) 1.890kN (offside) IMBALANCE 61%
    Parking Brake effort 22%

a second issue is the brake noise.
it passed the brake test but as mentioned, there is a squeak when stopping.

    Front axle 2.560kN (Nearside) 2.820kN(Offside) 13% (Nearside) 9% (Offside) 9% imbalance

rear axle 1.560 kN (Nearside) 1.190kN (offside) 24% (nearside) 10% (offside) 24% imbalance

is there something here that would explain the noise?

what is involved in fixing the car?

Noise could be due to poor quality brake pads fitted.
But noise is not NCT problem.

Problem your car failed seems to like in rear brakes. Both regular service brake in the rear as well as handbrake seem to be much less effective on left side than right side.

    I'd have them checked.

I'm assuming your brake pads changed were on the front.

thank you. i am going to bring it to a garage.
without looking at it they thought it could be the handbrake cord? it this likely?
and yes the brake pads were changed on the front only

Handbrake cable could indeed be seized or not tensioned correctly, but considering rear service brake readings also have 24% imbalance, there might be a problem with a brakes itself.

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it's a rear drum brake in your car.
If that's the case, brake shoes might be worn (more on the left side) or drums itself might be worn.
Possible as well that cylinder is seized, but that wouldn't explain poor results of a handbrake. (could be that both cylinder and handbrake cable issue).

In short it's impossible to tell without having a look at it

    Not really.
New braking shoes, or drums are cheap enough.
Labour changing them is also not excessive.
Even changing brake cylinder is not really much bother.

If mechanic is trying to rip you off on that, just ask somewhere else for quotation.

Most important thing though is correct diagnosis, as there's no point in changing parts which don't need changing.

squealing brakes are due to the pads vibrating against the caliper piston and easily fixed with a dab of copper grease on the back of them. I'm not sure if modern cars have anti-squeal shims, the cars I'm familiar with would have,.

Noise could also be the discs, changed the pads on mine and very bad squeal when braking, ended up changing both pads and discs, problem gone, Don't have a picture, but the heat marks on the discs was very evident.

As for the hand brake, the cables might need replacing, or if discs on the back, the hand brake shoes might need replacing.
