    Hi all

Picked up a rental car this evening as my car is in for a service. The hire car was left at the garage for me to collect.

When I arrived I noticed a opel insigna from enterprise rent a car but the tax was dated 10/17. I needed to be somewhere this evening and didn't have time to hang around.

I did call enterprise to complain and enquired about the legality of me driving a car without a valid tax disc. they told me that it's fine that the tax office made a lot of errors and printed the wrong dates on the tax discs for the enterprise fleet.....

Am I correct in saying that if I am stopped it's my responsibility as a driver to ensure that the tax disc is valid no matter what the excuse?

    You would be correct.

Its a fine and as its only out I very much doubt you will have any issue.

Fine will be paid by rental company so don't stress.

AFAIK the responsibilty of taxing the car lies with the registered owner i.e the rental company. I wouldn't worry about it.

Up to the driver nobody else.

But as its a rental they will pay the fine as its their error if a fine were given.

If lights go or tyres and so on its up to the driver nobody else.

No. With tax being out of date only few days you will be just fine.

Shouldn't happen, but no need to worry too much about it.

Once everything else is road legal, you hold a licence and keep within the laws you should be fine.

Tax is usually left 30 days but after that they can get a bit sticky if your checked.

Just goes to show the low intelligence level of their employees when that’s the best excuse they could come up with which incidentally is a crock of shïte as the tax office deal with rental car companies tax applications the exact same way as it does anyone else.

If they had half a brain cell they would have used the ‘its in the post’ excuse.

They told you complete and utter rubbish; anyone driving a car without a valid tax disc can be fined. I had a similar issue with Hertz two years ago except I have my noticed it when I parked the car. I called them, the admin assistant had the tax disc in the office and they sent it to me via taxi. The alternative was them coming to collect the car.
