Hello all, I'll be visiting Courtown at the end of December. Can anyone tell me what to expect? My Daughter is volunteering at the Seal Rescue Center for five months and I'm coming with for a couple weeks. We'll be spending Christmas there. What's the town like this time of year? i won't have a car, will I be able to find all I need or will it be shuttered for the holidays?
    Thanks,

Not much happening there in the winter, there's a small supermarket in riverchappel which is about 1/2 a mile walk and there is a convenience store and petrol station in the village for bits and bobs. You won't be short of pubs tho there'll be 4 open at least, I'm not too sure of the status of the courtown hotel. It may be in between owners at the moment. The leisure centre and swimming pool will be open and also the slot machines if you want to throw away you're money. That's courtown in a nutshell.

Also the placename is misleading - should be Courvillage!

Thanks for the info. A village will be a nice change of pace from Los Angeles.

A change of pace for sure, a change of weather also !! Bring winter woolies, you might feel the lower temperature a lot more coming from LA, great beaches all the way down the coast to almost Wexford town

On the subject of winter woolies, don't take that literally when it comes to outerwear. Bring a waterproof quilted synthetic anorak type jacket rather than a woolen one. I hope you are staying somewhere nice, not a great deal of action in Courtown in winter and without a car.

Thanks! I'm 52 so not looking for much action. Lol. I rented a newer looking apartment in the middle of town. I had a bad time renting a car in Ireland last year. Here in the States my credit card covers liability. Not the case on the old sod. The car ended up costing four times the rate I booked it for. I'm not looking to do much since I'm just escorting my daughter for her job at the seal center. I'm just planning to enjoy the Motherland and knock back a couple pints! Thanks for all the info. Be there in a month.

Have fun, and of course I meant the term “winter woolies” in the non literal sense, though I think you got that.

Are you cooking christmas dinner? Plenty of advice in the food forum, infact any info you need you can’t go far wrong with asking on here.

Sorry to break it to you but in general only emergency services work on the 25th, life slowly comes back from 26th/27th Dec:) so no chipper, you may buy a bag of spuds sprouts carrots and a bit of ham and some turkey, don’t forget the stuffing and gravy - it’ll be great ;)

Ah ya never know he might get Paulen in the Tara Vie to cook him up a Christmas dinner on the 24th and stick it in the microwave for the big day.

Oh, another thing. I'm going to take the train from Dublin to Gorey. Are cabs plentiful there? what's the best way to get from Gorey to Courtown?

Plenty of taxis and they will give you a number to call at the station - assuming it's manned when you arrive. You could do worse than make your way to French's Pub - a short walk from the station - and fortify yourself for Courtown before calling a taxi.

There's nothing quite like the friendly wellcome of an Irish landlord. Jim French is famous for his warmth in these parts.
