    Hi all,
Was driving my 1.9 tdi 08 passat the other day with 143,00 miles on the clock & it decided to blow a con rod through the engine block . Any idea what it may cost to replace the engine? Thinking 1000-2000 euro.

I'd budget 4 to 500e for an engine and roughly the same to fit.

Get some quotes from local mechanics, incl a dealer.
It will tell you for sure.

It all depends on how you want to approach it. If you plan on keeping the car then it makes sense to do other preventative work at the same time, for example timing belt, clutch/flywheel, recon turbo etc.

If you want to do just the bare minimum to get the car back on the road then you are probably looking at €1400-1500 depending on how much you have to pay for a secondhand engine.

There's a particular engine code of 1.9tdi engines around 2008 that has the issue you're having. One in twenty cars is affected.

    Paper thin conrods to blame.

Although in most cases avoidable by servicing on time (or ahead of, never delayed) with appropriate oil.

Interwebs say to search for BKC engine instead:

As I posted in the chat last week here is one we did two weeks ago, was 1200 all in with just a new timing belt kit, original clutch, turbo etc. Had real trouble getting an engine to fit, was in an a3 and a few bits were unique

You can service them well ahead of schedule with the very best oil and they will still put the conrod out through the block. The only cure is to replace the shell bearings every 50k miles or so as these start to wear and chip and eventually fail which leads to the conrod through the block issue.

An engine for one of these could cost anything from €600 to north of a thousand euro.

That's it. I have one myself. Took a gamble on it when I bought it as the milage was low and the price was good.
