Just wondering does anyone have any experience farming in Australia?  Are they eager to recruit farmers to work there?

What kind of farming do you want to do? Where in Australia do you want to go? Yeah if you have experience they are crying out for people especially dairying.

I have really done anything apart from some sheep farming but that was many years ago. I wouldn't mind picking it up again.

Lots of work out there. I'm going in January. Lots of dairy in NSW, around Sydney and west of Sydney. Tillage around esperence which is about 5 hours from Perth. Cattle and sheep stations in WA. Agri recruit are a good way to find jobs. Moxy dairy farms are always looking for workers even for entry level jobs there 5 hours away from Sydney near a town called orange. I've 2 friends working there and love it.

Do you have a visa lined up?

Done a seeding and harvesting season in WA, basic digs provided as will be in most cases. I got in with a good gang and loved it. Long days and nights. Plenty of beer and roo shooting on the downtime. You have to remember you'll probably be in a very remote area. If that doesn't bother you fire away.
Thejobshop.com is a good place to start looking for work.

You might have to start off on small farm so. Most farms from my experience that are on the ball prefer a person with some experience but that work from years ago might suffice. The rough farms tend to take on anyone but they can be awful places. That's my opinion and I could be wrong!

Working holiday visa is the best way for under 30. 6 months per job is the maximum so you have to move around. Try different sectors. The stations are usually seriously isolated though so be aware of that but are some experience I'd say.

WA has decent harvest/seeding work. Some dairy work and sheep. Cattle stations too. South Australia has harvest too. Victoria is good for dairy. Queensland for fruit. Northern territory for stations. I hope you like beer and fishing too!

Just got conformation there yesterday. Have a job lined up before you go. I've a friend who just decided to go but no job lined up and living in Sydney. If you can hit the ground running with a job it'll stop you eating into your savings.

Just be aware that cash in hand work will be difficult to find and is illegal. If you are questioned about it at immigration and they suspect you are going over to work illegally they will send you on the first available flight back to Ireland with a 3 year ban from Australia.

Bad move. You'll get involved in absolute messy farms with no comeback. Working holiday is the best route. Who's going to sponsor you after three months. On the other hand it could all work out but it's hardly worth the risk. The ozzies don't mess about.

Hard to get cash in hand and you won't get sponsored that way. Have you a trade?

Be very careful with regard customs. They have no hastle kicking in your door at 4am and putting you on a plane.

I forked out around 3k to get sponsorship too so keep a few quid in the bank.

Best bet is to go the trade route and if you have no trade congrats you are now a form worker ha

You'll find it hard to get sponsored unless your willing to stay bush for a few years or are handy at form work and find a company willing to sponsor you. Other option is to go de-facto with the misses if she has a job on the list. It's not easy to be honest. You'd be better off getting the working Holiday visa and doing your 3 months out in the bush to qualify for your second year automatically. The Holliday visa is a waste of time. Are you 31 or under?

Young lad is out there on a working holiday visa. He si doing his rural placement at present 88 day to qualify for a 2 year visa. He is working on a farm in NSW 150 suckler cows and 5.5K ewes spreda over 2-3 places. He is happy out willing to work 12-15 hour days 7 day week as there is nothing to do 50 miles from nearest towns.

At present owner has only him usually he has 2 backpackers. He earn more milking cows or driving a machine but prefers to do this as it is more varied. He is going to Sydney thsi weekend for 3-4 days and will go again at Christmas. Then back to finish rest of the 88 days. He reckons he will have about 10K saved at the end of it as all his accomodation and food is provided with a daily pay rate. This is the busy time of year on farms until Christmas then it slow down a bit. Lads often get big money for these few weeks but nothing after

Other thing is some pay a good hourly rate but charge you well for food and accomodation. After he has his rural placement done he intends traveling and working with is present qualification.

Kind of off topic but when would you receive your tax file number and which airline would be the best to travel with in terms of legroom ?

For farm work I found my tshirts too heavy so I got a heap of mining work shirts off a friend. They breathe and are illuminous. Plus cover you up when you need to. Few pairs of sunglasses plus hats. Suncream. Good thick socks and non black boots. Target is ok shop to get stuff. Its cheap but doesnt usually last more than a year. Suited my budget! Pants are more for winter usually. Hoodys to get over the morning chill. I used wear my pants over my shorts milking in the mornings and then whip them off.

snickers trousers were the one thing i missed the most. other than that id bring next to nothing. everything can be picked up handy out there. boxers, t shirts, jeans everything is lighter out there and better suited for where your going. theres a lot of people back pack with a pair of shorts a shirt and a pair of jeans. buy your boots in aus too, youve got serious options and quality available out there.

Definitly need a good sun hat for sure, in nz wed wear fleece a lot as its fast drying (sweating buckets) and singlets are the bees knees here. Goes without saying youll need a few water bottles in the cab with you and plenty of sunscreen, recently there was a study done in nz IIRC the cancer society sunscreen was the most trustworthy. I know for a fact you dont need to be told to wear shades anyway 😂

I found sunglasses impossible to get used to wearing them when in nz!

Though the burn time, deos make sun cream and moistureuser necessary

Eldest is currently in Aus on a 2 year visa. He did his regional/work placement last year a few hundred miles from Perth and said that the flies would feckin eat ye alive.
Bottles of water, sunglasses, high factor sun screen, a cap and suitable clothing. If your out in the fields then good quality work boots and plenty of changes of socks are also a must.
