Chimney cleaned 4 weeks ago - smokey room ever since

    Hi,

This relates to my (widowed) mother's extremely old farmhouse, well over a hundred years or more.

She is beyond stubborn (re any kind of home improvements/making life easier in general at her advanced age etc).

This is a particular issue in relation to the kitchen range, which is ancient and smoky & pretty inefficient at the best of times.

The chimney was cleaned a few weeks ago (by her usual contractor) and ever since, the kitchen is abnormally smoky, with no reprieve in sight.

Clearly, something is terribly wrong, but she is unwilling to do anything about it [this is not a rational response, but this is a side-issue to the main problem].

Did the guy mess up the job or is the range just beyond saving?

Sorry for the light detail; I am getting this 2nd hand from my brother (to whom my mother will not listen).

She will not even allow my brother contact the contractor to review the matter.

What is your professional opinion, based on the scant information supplied above?

My mother might not care, but there are other young adults in that house as well.

    Thanks in advance,
    Olive K

Get the contractor back in to survey
Then if your not happy with what your told, get a second opinion from a contractor or surveyor with a camera.
Worst case it’s the chimney liner that’s the problem

In the mean time stop lighting the fire. It’s a health & fire hazard

I would guess that the cooker wasn't cleaned out at all, or enough . or that it wasn't put back together correctly.
