    Hey guys/gals,

Is Star Citizen worth getting? Are there many Irish people/groups out there that play it?

Personally it is too buggie for me. There is a new alpha version on route.

For a game thats still in alpha is $45 a bit much to ask?

Its not for me in its current state, will probably get it if it ever releases.

Been waiting on 3.0 for far to long now,id wait and see how that pans out before buyung any version of the game.

There is just not enough game there at the moment to make any sort of sound decision on it. Its all potential at this point.

So I bit the bullet a while ago and bought this but without anyone to hang with its not that much fun, are there any Irish peeps into mining/trading and don't mind showing me the ropes?

I play it regularly altho I hate it, 3.17 is amazingly broken and hilarously fun at the same time.

I keep getting CTD's after about a half hour of play.

Can't figure out what's causing it,game just closes and no error or anything.

are you doing anything in particular - e.g. every time you use Quantum drive

What specs is your system running - CPU ram etc

Crap sorry i didnt see this response before now. That time it was after using the quantum drive alright

Ive tried the new build 3.17.1 i think it is, and my god its awful performance.

    Runing a 9700K @ 4.9GHz all core,rtx 3080 and 16gb of 3200mhz memory. Its running on a 500mb/s ssd also.

Biggest bottleneck im seeing by far is the 9700K,at points its just stuck on 100% usage. Tried to set graphics to very high to move some load to GPU but results were not great either. I get most CPU's are multi-threaded these days but ive not really run into that issue before now, most games im running at 120hz @ 1440p

Not sure what to try next, like the game has been out long enough there should be some sort of stable build there lol

So i finally get to my ship and this is what i see😂

    lol.jpg

    Now this.....

    lol1.jpg

So i read on reddit...that when you store your ship with the thrusters still active the upside down ship is a thing.

Two ways to sort apparently, ask someone to give you a ride to another station and spawn the ship there or reset your character, which i thought would be a quick and easy process but no.....more software gore tbh🤣

Man i wanna like this game but nearly 7 years now, like c'mon

16gb isnt enough ram, get more lots and lots more.

Tbh in this day and age 32 is the "standard" minimum.

Resets are slowed down due to duplicate ships issue, usually takes 15 minutes but its longer now.

Not showing a memory bottle neck in MSI.

If your mean 32gb is standard minimum for star citizen fair enough but 16gb is more than enough for nearly everything gaming related.

The game is pure software gore atm.

    I can’t remember did I get the 64GB upgrade for this…

I totally missed citizencon et al. Since they’ve announced meshing, 3.18 and pyro I’m on the pure wait.

Dropped in for fleetweek but you know how it is, come to star citizen for a week or two, get ducked with bugs, leave. The orison raid scene looked cool but needs hella polish. They did fleece me for drake day - vulture mule and cutlass all my poor wallet

@Cheesebread in game if you ever spot me

After the 3.17 event when they did the partial reset and gave everyone an incorrect reward.

I got 68m which I spent on ships and have barely played it since.

I backed it originally during the kickstarter, I've tried playing it a dozen or so times over the years, and each time I just give up in frustration. The last time I tried, I started in the apartment, immediately was launched through the wall and fell to my death. Next time it took me a half hour to be able to open the door since every time I tried it would start opening and closing at high speed.

I finally got down to the train, waited for it to arrive, and when it did it was vertical and moving sideways jerking all over the screen.

So every time I think Elite Dangerous is awful I give it a lash, and within a few hours am back playing Elite again. (Taking a break from it now though)

IAE 2952 is in a few weeks. Free Fly Event, 100+ ships across the whole event to try out.

@ubermick yes that's been my 3.16/17 User Experience too lol.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,622 ✭✭✭Revoker88

I only ever paid €35 for it back in the day so no big loss really

Honestly, been my experience every single time I've tried to give the game a go, riddled with bugs and performance has always been terrible.

Saying its early access at this point doesn't really cut it anymore for me either.

Tbh I've given up on it at this point, it's just a cash machine tech demo.

I've tried to give it a chance over the years but really it's never been close to being a game imo🤷‍♂️

I'm not so sure yet. CIG's definitely followed an extremely non traditional games development approach, but this multidisciplinary systems engineering approach they've taken is proven in other industries and is sound - they are actually producing and making upward progress. They need that complexity, owing to the number of underlying systems they want/need to develop for the games aims. They are however, taking huge risks because they don't have a NASA level budget and, at times, they have run into constraints they've identified as whole new technologies needing to be developed (eg. server meshing) that they can not farm out like NASA could by throwing money at it - but contrast to other famous failures in gaming like say Duke Nukem Forever it's not a case of them just faffing about for 11 years. I have seen and played the deliverables. And I don't think it will flop on release (whenever decade that is, Chris might decide all the rivers need to be painted by hand to eliminate all the procedural repetitiveness). I plan to check out Pyro when that comes out which I think is 4.0, and I'll probably do a run of 3.18 to see their rollout of their gen12 renderer (performance uplift! moar frames!) but there's no point in daily or weekly play while the bugs are high as the changes are getting fast and so are the amount of progress wipes CIG is pushing in the last year. I hope when they do 4.0, that they take a second to push a clean and stable build for a while, bug-killing focused not feature-adding focused, because I think there will be a lot of interest from players and backers when Pyro comes online, because of course there will be. Especially if they can guarantee player persistence and give people more reasons to wanna **** around

Pretty sure its one of the top games ever with the funds they have gotten so far.

I am still sceptical about it all but when it works, whats there works very well. I over specced for it and oddly 64gb does make a massive difference.

Its a glorified tech demo. One day it might actually be a complete game, but they have no financial incentive to do anything different right now. Still making bucket loads of cash selling custom ships.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,683 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I honestly don't blame them for growing this tree as big as they can before they have to publish and keep it pruned. He's obviously got some big red oak of a game system in the works going by the tech demo so I'm eager to see how it evolves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭ubermick

Yeah, same as myself. I did the base backing, so not out a fortune and will be a pleasant surprise if it ever gets released. Which I'm fairly skeptical about in fairness.

I mean, all the promises that have been made, and a decade later they're still only working on system one of a hundred, are nowhere closer to having their servers accommodate enough players, they keep postponing milestones and claiming things like being able to buy a coffee in a station, or the latest one was making bedsheets more realistic of all things are signs of proper progress.

I'd love it to work out, and I do want to see it released but their whole thing screams a scam. At this stage it reminds me a bit of scientology where the fella at the top is a known swindler and fraud, but under no circumstances is anyone allowed to question the goings on, anyone who says anything bad about the game gets piled on, and at the end of the day they just want more people pouring money into it.

Free fly this weekend and a new ship being released Drake Cutter :D

I would like some of the older ships to get a polish pass like:

    Titan Avenger stop randomly exploding.

Redeemer tail remake it from a material thats stronger than tin foil.

    Andromeda fix the lift.
