    Hi everyone,
just wondering if somebody could give me some info please. I am currently on job seekers benefit (stamps) I had been on illness benefit for a year and a half due to an injury and have come onto my stamps the past 2 months which gives me a payment of 193 p/w . my doctor has now said that it is best for me to sign on for disability allowance as my injury has gotten a lot worse which results in me being unfit for work.
I was just wondering if anybody would know what happens my payment when I am awaiting a decision for my disability allowance application? I am only 22 so if I go to a S.W.A payment will they reduce me to 100 euro per week for my age or will my 193 continue?
    thanks

It’s not DA you need to apply for its Invalidity Pension.
Your GP means we’ll but mostly they don’t know enough about SW to give you informed advice.
In saying that you should absolutely apply for both these payments to give yourself the best chance.
At 22 you need to send lots and lots of medical documentary evidence with the application in order to be awarded .
As ever , a letter from yourself describing your life and how you aren’t available for work because of your condition can be the difference between getting it and not getting it.
    Good luck.
Oh you need to contact your local SW office to inform them that your not available for work.
Hopefully they will leave you on your JSB. They have been doing that recently.
How did your Illness Benefit end ? You should have got it for 2 years?

    Invalidity pension is PRSI based.
Maybe you wouldn’t have enough PRSI at 22.
You need 5 years paid contributions .
    Would you have that?

    Heya.
Sorry for the late reply, No i wouldnt have 5 years paid contributions. I have already been on ilness benefit a year and a half and onto my stamps now which i think are due to expire soon. I am just worried about payment while i await a decison on my disability claim. I dont know who would pay me or how much i should get as i have my own place and would never survive on S.W.A payment of 100 p/w i was working full time prior to the accident.
    Thanks for your help.

Sorry i also should have added i still havent given in the form as i just have no idea about the procese and what i have been reading has me very confused. A lot of people seem to be saying that they refuse people due to age and mostly first time applicants. Im just worried regarding payments.

You will stay on your DB until it runs out. Afterwards you will be transfered to Jobseekers Allowance. It is a means tested payment and all your income- also all that of your partner living with you- will be taken into consideration. You will have to sign on at times. But you will NOT have to look for work and will NOT put on shemes or offered jobs. It is just a technical stay on JSA. You will stay on JSA until your claim for DA is decided. If it is decided that you should not get it, you can appeal- and still stay on JSA. They will not sent you away and give you nothing- you will be looked after. The game is only up when you have lost your final appeal. That is years down the road- it really takes that long.
    So don't worry !

Can the SW actually leave someone with no money ?

If you have exhausted the appeals system after being refused a disability/illness payment and you refuse to agree to the conditions attached to a jobseekers payment, then yes , of course you can be left with no payment at all.
There are conditions and obligations attached to all SW payments.
    There has to be.
It’s not a question of SW “leaving you with no money”.
You leave yourself with no money by not accepting the contract offered to you.

I think the last one you can go to is the community welfare officer. He can decide on his own to give you supplementary welfare allowance for a certain time. Of course there are strings attached to that as well. There is never any money without rules.

I was recently approved for disability allowance, it was granted without any appeals etc, and I'm also relatively young and a first time applicant.

When you say you're using your stamps, do you mean you're currently claiming JSB?

While I was waiting for my disability claim to be processed, the CWO granted a supplementary payment of €193 a week - she literally gave me a cheque on the spot for that week, and I had to collect it in the post office every other week - which was grand until I ended up in hospital and therefore wasn't able to collect it any more, thankfully the disability payment was approved around the same time so I only missed a week or two in between.

As far as I remember the only stipulation was that I'd to call back in to the office every 4-6 weeks to confirm I was still waiting for a decision on the disability payment.

Yes i am on JSB at the moment which entitles me to 193 per week. I think my JCB is due to expire very soon. I am 22 years old and currently in a house share. I am getting no HAP as my landlord doesnt accept it and therefor i wouldnt survive financially on 100 per week. Due to not been able to work I have no other option to apply for DA but was worried a community welfare officer would only grant me 100 p/w because of my age while i await a decision on my DA. I am not living with a partner.

    Hiya,
Yes i was a bit worried with payments as i wasnt sure how it worked with a community welfare officer, i wouldnt be entitled to 193 per week on JSA Im only getting 193 as i am currently on JSB. My DA claim is a fairly strong application as i have a bad injury which confides me to bed at least 3 days a week if not more so im hoping it doesnt go on too long. My doctor has detailed my application with an awful lot of info. Breaks my heart having to go on to DA at such a young age as I was hoping to return to college next september and dont think i would be entitled to any payment awaiting a decision if i was to return to college

Make sure you write a letter to accompany your DA application ,detailing in depth how your dissabilty affects you day to day,This is very important ,i was refused first then appealed with the letter ,was accepted ,,a friend i know had very detailed letter in their first application ,he was accepted first time,he applied in January was accepted in march 12 weeks to the day ,mine took 11 months ..New applications are decided quicker now ,older ones can still be going on over a year and longer,I Was told this from woman in Longford DA.

Op it has to be expected to last a year at least for DA to be granted.

    hiya,
I had decided myself not to go with the disability allowance applocation as I am currently receiveing bew trearment for my back. My doctor has put me back out on certs and I will be on them for a few months. I contacted illness benefit who explained that i only have 173 contrabutions which means i am only entitled to 10 weeks payment from them and advised me to go to a CWO officer for the payments there afterwards. I had a meeting with a CWO officer who has told me that if i continue to hand in certs weekly they will pay me €100 a week as I am only 23. I explained that 100p/w wouls not cover the cost of my living expenses. rent, bills, loans, medical expenses and travelling to a different county for medical treatment with my back but was told that there is nothing else they can do for me and was quite intimidating. I have been in tears the past few days wondering how I am going to get by. Is there anything else I can do or is there any way of getting my payment kept at 193 p/w.

If your disability is likely to keep you out of work for a year, you can still apply for disability allowance, even if you're getting treatment.

I’m sorry your so upset. The very best thing for you to do right now is apply for Disability Allowance as quickly as you can.
The CWO cannot give you any more than €100 because of your age.

You can go to college and get DA and get a SUSI grant as well.
It’s just a question of notifying DA that your starting a course.
You can’t get a top up payment because your age dictates that €100 is the max for you and there’s no budging on that.

    From citizensinformation.ie

If you are getting a One-Parent Family Payment (or Jobseeker’s Transitional payment) or a disability payment (Disability Allowance, Invalidity Pension or Illness Benefit) you can choose to stay on your current social welfare payment (if you continue to meet the rules of the scheme) and apply for a student grant or you can choose to transfer to the BTEA, depending on which option will benefit you most. In general, people who are studying full-time are not entitled to Rent Supplement unless they are getting BTEA.

But she's said her injury is only expected to last a few months so why are you recommending she applies for DA?
I'm genuinely confused as she will be refused it on that basis.

yes i do nor want to be on DA. I will be on certs from my doctor for the next while. I have been to a community welfare officer before and awarded a top up payment with the exact same issue
I was being paid €100 and given a top up of 86 p/w. My circumstances are far worse now as my outgoings are a lot more and travel for medical treatment. I was just wondering if there is someone else i can contact about it as I have been given a top up before.

Op, have you been to your local citizens information office, they are extremely helpful? They might tell you of alternative options. My gut is saying hold off on attending college for a while until you can stabilise your financial situation, it ll just add to your stresses. Best of luck

I havent been to my local citizens info office but will give them a call tomorrow thamk you. My main concern is a CWO expecting me to survive on a payment far below my living expenses whilst having providing a top up payment before? CWO was very rude to me and barley listened to what i had to say or considered expenses. Im actually in tears and worried the past week. I will be attending college in sept as I never want to be in this type situation again and college seems to me the only way foward in terms surviving financially.

Unfortunately it's not about your living expenses it's down to what your only entitled to legally
