Heat recovery systems- Cost

    Reference: Total Cost of Ownership, Heat Recovery Systems.

    On initial evaluation, heat wheel based heat recovery systems seem like an attractive option for homes that have adequate room for installation of the supply and extract ducting necessary and in specifying new buildings from scratch.

    Many such systems claim a reliable service life of 20 to 30 years in continuous use[1].

    In our case, we installed Enervent LTR-6 /190 purchased from Entropic Ltd. in Ireland and commissioned in October 2009. Both circulation fans seized completely in July 2017. The electrical motor bearings appear to have failed. The main heat recovery fan and drive are fine on examination.

    The extract and supply fan units installed are EBMPAPST D3G146-AH50-13 units.


    I would like to get advice as to what other users have found to be a reliable system of similar size which can reliably operated for an installed life of 20 years plus.


    Technical Curiosity:

    The correct EMBPABST fan unit specified in the (current) Enervent technical documentation is listed as D3G146-AH50-01. I cannot find the originally installed -13 designation available on the Papst or other websites. The current data sheet for the D3G146-AH50-01 designation clearly demands horizontal shaft installation, whereas the Enervent LTR-6 specifications claim installation such that the fans can be in vertical or horizontal orientation. In our installation the LTR-6 was installed such that the centrifugal fan shafts ended in a vertical orientation.
