Does anyone know what exterior plastering with bumps all over it is all called? They are big bumps...the only way i can describe them is that they look like tortoise shells all over the wall. Googled everything I could think of but can't find it. Popular around Wexford so maybe it's a local thing but seems very Spanishey

Edit: coordinates of a house that has it which you can see on Google street view

a really good or really bad plasterer.
a good one will intentionally create an effect like that a bad one will do it but not intentionally.

This is what the OP is talking about. I've just included the garage as it was clearer when zoomed in.

Google stippling ceiling OP. Is that what you're looking for?

Just reread OP there. Yeah that's just gank. Pure mudhouse effect.

    definitely in the minority

I would be very worried about something like this reducing any value of the house if you went to sell it. most people would look at that and see a huge job that needs doing. I would I think its horrible

    but each to their own

That finish is found in coastal area's mostly although I have seen a few in Cork city. I think it looks nice near a beach but maybe not as bumpy as in the pic.
Its done AFAIK by either haphazardly troweling on the finish coat and tossing bumps where wanted then sponging or straightening/floating up the final coat and tossing on regular bumps and brushing/sponging.

Yes all the houses I know with it are all on the coast. Have googled everything I could think of but can't find a name or any details about it.

I think it's just a generic texture finish. I'm not too clued in, though. You've probably seen this link already, but just incase:

Personally I don't hate it, but wouldn't do it myself. I am a fan of minimalist, modern, etc. so my preference on an external finish would probably be as smooth as possible.

There's a house near me with similar, although not the same, and I don't really love it or hate it. Completely indifferent to it. Coords are 53.740532, -6.441660 or the following link:

Yes very similar style there. I've come to the conclusion that it's not any particular "style" of plastering but more individual people who got a mad notion to do something different. My grandfather covered his house in sea shells so maybe this has influenced what i like.
Here is his house if you have any interest

That I'd love to see. Just enter the coordinates into Google maps?
There was a seashell covered house in Jersey CI I used love driving past it, always made me smile.

I've seen traditional rough stone cottages, lime plastered and white washed with a that rough look, that can look amazingly good.!
. . . And then there's concrete plastered houses with God awful mock rough plaster...Shur While you're at it why not add some mock tudor beams as well!!

Jesus, that looks like something out of Aladdin. Amazing level of effort put into that. I applaud the time and dedication that would have been required to get that looking the way it does.

Not really in the same league as any of the stuff that's been posted on the plastering front.

Yes he was at it for most of his life. Some great detail on it alright it's more art than construction. Unfortunately it turned out to be detrimental to the house itself as it caused dampness inside. He used to say the house couldn't breathe with all the shells but at that stage he was too far into it to turn back.

Wow. That's some amount of time and dedication right there. Fair play to him, cant criticise a man for sticking to his tastes albeit not mine. Amazing.

I've been thinking about "your" style of plastering today, and its beginning to grow on me. Just driving around today looking at any amount of mundane plaster finishes with a few mock quoin finishes, high time fellas started venturing outside the box.

Yes that's exactly why i like it. When i first seen that house it just stood out from a row of a dozen other "normal" houses. There seems to be a limited amount of house designs in this country over the last 20 years and as a result we are in a "if you've seen one you've seen 'em all" situation. There's no one doing anything different with their houses and so a quirky design element like that type of plastering sets that house apart from almost all others. People need to get back to having mad notions and not just conforming to what everyone else is doing. In my opinion.
