    Hi Guys,

Looking to get a laptop for photoshop, video editing, watching movies, listening to music and using microsoft office/excel on. The video editing that I will be doing will only be of videos up to 5 minutes long so nothing to serious.

I travel quite a bit and it will be used for business so can't be to bulky. Also, I don't need a lot of memory either, about 128GB would be enough.

Budget goes up to about €950!

Thanks for any help or suggestions,
    Taco

    http://www.dell.com/en-ie/shop/laptops/inspiron-13-7000-laptop/spd/inspiron-13-7370-laptop

something like this might fit the bill - €922 currently.

    256gb ssd
    full hd 13.3 inch screen
    light at 1.4kg
    latest i5 8250u chip (4-core mobile chip)
    metal case
fast charging technology to charge battery quick.

there was a 100 euro off deal that ended nov 2. maybe there will be another one soon - around black Friday maybe

That lapotp looks very good but I just ordered this one a few days ago! https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N24EENE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Bit of a pity because the one I bought is pretty big so the Inspiron would have suited better. Do you think the specs on the one I got are good? Can still return it since it is unopened...

the one you bought is a very different type of laptop - it's a gaming laptop.
it looks like a decent laptop but would be a bit heavy at 2.5kg for travelling a lot with.

the dell is a thin-and-light laptop built for travelling with. the battery life in the dell will be better also.

    it's up to you.....

the dell would handle light video editing fine but the acer has a dedicated graphics card that would fly through very heavy video editing.

I'd say that if you really will need to travel a fair bit with the laptop then the dell is a better bet, especially if you're only doing short video editing as you described and don't plan on playing big title demanding games.

the cpus in both laptops should compare pretty much evenly as the new 8th gen i5 8250u is pretty powerful with 4 cores.

here's a review of the dell - well not the exact one but the same build except the one in the video can be bent around to tablet mode and has a touch screen (not essential imo - the one I linked doesn't have that).

here's a look at the actual 13 (and the 15 model also)

If you have a chance to return it and get your money back (check the T&C's of shipping from Amazon and the sellers Acer) then I would.

At least 16 GB RAM would be much better for video editing and possibly more if doing 4K.

As for storage, if you're continually building videos, then you'll eat up your allowance very quickly - this appears to have good SSD storage for the videos you're working on and then HDD for the stuff you wish to archive.

But yeah, start again if you can.

what the op described in the first post sounds like light video editing to me which a laptop with a decent cpu would handle. op also said that he wanted a laptop suitable for travel and that he doesn't need much storage. the title of the thread is a bit misleading.

    Thanks Glasso for those links!

The video editing is just light. Realistically max video lengths will be 5 minutes and won't be 4k. The laptop is currently being shipped so once it arrives I am going to take it out of the box (carefully) just to see how it feels size wise. If I like the feel of it then I am right in thinking that I should keep it because the specs seem pretty good? Would you think the specs are better in comparison to the Inspiron?

I did look at 16gb ram but in order to get that for my budget I would have had to take a hit on the other specs. Figured that 8gb ram allowed me to get a better overall laptop as I could get SSD, 4 core processor, dedicated graphics card etc.

The 128gb SSD is loads as SSD will be used during video editing only. The videos will then be moved over to the HDD once finished.

Would the Inspiron definitely be good enough for photoshop and video editing? I am pretty impatient so hate any lag time or slowness!!

4K is becoming more prominent so I would advise to future proof the PC- regardless of this, I'm sticking with 16GB RAM for video editing as a recommendation, purely from personal experience.

I can't say for 100% as I don't have that laptop but there is this quote

"However, the jewel in the crown is definitely the new Core i5-8250U which has four cores with 3.4 GHz Turbo Boost frequency and 6MBs of LL cache. It should provide decent performance even for casual photo / video editing and although the Swift 3 has DDR3 RAM, 8250U supports DDR4 at 2133 MHz."

the dell has the faster ddr4 ram also.

Just an update guys. Received the Acer from Amazon. Nice laptop in ways but lacking in other areas. Screen appears to be too bright/white lighty. It is also a bit jumpy and when you scroll, the screen is blurry. Also when it gets a slight knock the screen goes black and it has to be restarted in order to get the picture back and so I am returning it to Amazon. On the upside I actually don't mind the size of it. It feels quite sturdy and good too hold.

Going to buy the Inspiron when I receive the refund.

dell have started a pre black friday sale - keep an eye on that and the main sale for the one you want as you could get a decent saving.

the i7 version is down to 850 euros (it's cheaper than the i5 version at the moment)
it's a bit more powerful than the i5 in real-world, but not a huge amount.

Glasso, thanks a lot for all of your posts, very very helpful. That looks like a good deal so as soon as the refund goes through I am going to go for it. I think I am going to go for the 15inch version if there is a sale on that at during black friday.

yeah the 7000 series thin and light dell laptops have borrowed a lot of features from the xps line and are pretty nice. the 15 is a bit heavy tho imo at nearly 2kg
