Just 5 out of 6474 cars owned by the Irish state in 2016 are EVs. That's a lousy 0.077%. Which is lower than the 0.081% it was in 2015

Will this country ever catch up?

They should provide more charging points, make parking free at them, give us all a guarantee that charging and parking will remain free (thoroughly enforce misuse of the spots), abolish motor tax for them and give companies a tax or corporate tax break if they provide ev charging points for employees, give people grants for their home spark bill if they prove they’re charging a ev, deny planning permission for new apartments and car parks unless sufficient ev points are installed.

OP is talking about state-owned cars.

I would wager that all five are probably owned by the same local authority.

Only Teslas are good enough to arm Guardai/Emergency services etc with and they aint cheap

When Government went to tender I doubt the likes of BMW/Ford/Hyundai would be interested in giving us a good deal on sub par EV's anyway, much better deals on ICE

Ministers/TD's wouldn't like to be charging their Leaf's every 1 hour on the motorway either

They will move over in a few years when they are ready

    Isn't cost effective now

You're probably on the money there. Dublin city council most likely. Doesn't kceire work for them and he has reported they had a few Fluence ZE and even one or more Leafs?

    Eventually we will have to.

As these cars really start to catch on revenue will be hit. Less vat and duty collected. To make up for this they will toll more roads. Not just motorways either. In Dublin for example every main road from the suburbs into the city will be tolled. The savings that ev users have now will be eroded but the petrol and diesel cars will be hit with the new tolls and the existing tax, vat and duty that they already pay. They'll be literally taxed off the road.

Eventually the government will follow other countries and announce a cut off date for new petrol cars.

I haven't tried an ev myself but I think my next new small van will be ev. I'm guessing 3 to 6 years from now as my van is less than a year old. I was raving about my mpg on another thread. I was getting 65mpg. Since the kids are back in school it's dropped to 52 mpg or so

DCC have 2 fluences and 1 kangoo.

The EV’s must be kept off the books for financial reasons as there’s no way there’s only 5 that are state owned.

Cork City Council have one Kangoo EV with a few years that I've seen around the place.

    So that’s 4 of the stated 5.
I think the way the list is generated may keep some
State departments assets not shown. I won’t pretend to understand why.

I believe the OPW have at least one as they bought a 120kw truck in 2010.

"Cork City Council currently has a fleet which includes three EV vans, a Nissan Leaf and three Pedicels. Cork City Council’s EV and Pedicel fleet has been part funded through the Green eMotion EU Project. This project has supported the procurement of a Renault Kangoo EV for the City Fire Brigade. "

Don't know how old that is, though.

do these numbers not include electrically propelled waste vans?

The IT article refers to "cars" in the title

So I say that excludes any vans, trucks, those little waste vans, etc.

Part of the reason was explained by the LEV taskforce recently, currently EVs are not detailed in the Gov outline docs as purchasable by the state. This guideline is currently being drawn up and most EVs will be included. This would then allow ordinary depts like the Gardai to purchase EVs

Currently each EV would have to be independently justified.

Guideline says no. It's like with live in fookin communist China in 1950

state bodies have a purchase guideline document that in effect lists suitable vehicles , its quite extensive , to buy outside this requires individual purchase justification

hence most state bodies will not consider a EV until the document is updated

That is being done at the moment
