Large Nuts in feeder

Just purchased nuts in Woddies and I noticed they are bigger than the normal ones I get, wondering could I put them into a bag and make them smaller with a few light blows of a hammer or just leave them, reason for asking is the birds are not coming as quick as they used to since I put these ones out.

Large peanuts in a feeder would not be a problem at all.
