How to get involved in acting?

I'm currently in college.. so the obvious answer would be to join a society.
But there is only one major society, and they put on a production every year.
It's typically a pantomime, musical type of deal.. which goes down well every year.

It's not really my cup of tea. I'm not really up for a song and dance, but I've had this notion of getting involved in acting.. but not in a musical.

Where should I look? Am I better off joining a group outside of college?
    Just start auditioning?

I've two alternative endings, either make a career out of it acting in movies and tv shows or just do it as something cathartic that I enjoy doing..
How should I go about it?
