Looking at a 06 for my partner, what are they like reliability wise? Its a 1.6 FX model.

Theyre not bad at all. Main issues would be electronic, body computer on them can be troublesome, this would control stuff like central locking. Check the windows close properly too. They were a target for radio thieves back in the day as the frameless windows and lack of deadlocks made them easy to get into plus they used a generic DIN sized radio which could be sold (not really an issue these days to be honest) a lot would have very patchy service history and a good few got a smack so Check bodywork carefully.

Make sure the sunroof fully works as motor failure was very common on them and expensive to repair.

They are ok reliability wise but in general they aren't a very nice car. They were developed at a time when hyundai were building cheap cars and it shows. The engines aren't very refined in them, they don't have much power, the interior is cheap and bland and doesn't match the coupe looks.

I'd agree with comments regarding refinement, they don't have much, that said get one with leather and there not a bad place to be.

Reliability wise they tend to be fairly bulletproof especially the mechanical stuff, parts are cheap and easy got too.

Biggest con for me is the fact that they really are pretty slow for a twin cam 1.6 and kinda thirsty to boot.

Biggest pro is they are a fantastic chassis, they really do handle brilliantly well for a factory soft-sports car. Plus there cheap to buy.

I have an 05 2L and haven't had any major issues. Mechanically they're fine. The biggest spend I've had in 8 years was the timing belt and a clutch slave cylinder. There is currently 210,000 miles on the clock.

Not sure about the 1.6 but the The 2L has a bit of poke, but not what you'd get from a proper "sports" 2L engine. Quite thirsty too. Great fun in bends, handling would be similar to or a little below a 2WD Celica, IMHO.

The paint is really thin (at least on mine) and will chip if you look at it funny. As others have said, it's a bit spartan inside, but I'm happy enough with mine and will run it till it gives up.

OK, this doesn't sound too bad. Start and stop reliability is most important.
