Can you convince me out of buying my brother's desktop?

    It has an i7-6700k (with Noctua cooler and z170 mobo), 32GB ram, GTX 1070, SSD, HD, Seasonic PSU etc. He wants me to buy it for €1400 so he can get a laptop, he's studying video production and decided he'd be more productive editing out of thew house with a laptop then working at home and procastinating.

    But I only have a 1080p 60hz monitor (a budget Asus IPS with backlight bleed) and I've been using a Dell laptop with an i5-3210m and Radeon 7670m for half a decade now. It is well past time for an update (although I never bothered to replace its creaky years old 5400rpm HDD with a SSD, frankly it might be the only issue it has just for casual usage) but this is way overkill. I do game somewhat, but I do have a PS4 as well, and as interested in game modding and other PC benefits as I am..€1400 is a lot of money for me. I have no video editing or other productive uses for it. (I'm a humanities grad and frankly the textbook jokey example of one in terms of poor prospects, I ended up hating my course and....look I have a lot of free time right now) It is a great deal for the parts (AFAIK), I'd be doing him a huge favour and I do have the money saved up so I won't be in any trouble if I bought it but....

    I have used it, tried Fallout 4 on ultra with mods, it's very fun doing that. So it wouldn't be a paperweight, I want it. But I think I'm conflating a desperate need for a PC update with the need for a high-end gaming PC, and the only person who I can debate buying it with is him, so...snap me out out of it. Because it is a great deal. Given that I used the aforementioned laptop this long, I don't have a tendency to upgrade often, so I won't be unsatisfied with it quickly, assuming it is "future-proof", or at least not likely to become slow and useless soon.

    Apologies for the rambling.

    For that price you could build a full new PC with a six core Coffee Lake i5-8400, GTX1080, 16GB DDR4 3000mhz, Z370, 500GB SSD with 80+ Gold PSU and nice case. I would say that's reason enough! :)

    It's a nice machine with with decent extras, but if he's your brother he should be doing you a deal, 800euro??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,394 ✭✭✭Pac1Man

    That's a mental price!

    Is he your half-brother?

    Way overpriced

    Can you put together a build? I use PC Part Picker, Amazon and Komplett to compare.

    He says he's really desperate for the laptop because he can't focus at home and doesn't like the equipment at college. I'm not sure if he's being too fussy about the latter, I kind of understand the former as we're both autistic and home is just an unhealthy environment, so I felt encouraged to help him......but if it's that bad a deal :/

    Overclockers or Amazon depending on the parts.

    It sounds to me like he wants you to pay what he paid for the machine, but that's not very realistic, especially from a sibling!

    He would definitely not get 1400 for it if he sold it 2nd hand so to expect it from you really just seems to be taking advantage.

    For €1400ish you would get roughly the below delivered from OCUK:

    i5-8400 (six core)
    16GB DDR4 3000Mhz
    Z370 Motherboard
    GTX1070Ti 8GB
    500GB SSD
    550W 80+ Gold PSU
    Phanteks Eclipse case

    There wouldn't be much point paying the same money for a 2nd hand and older machine, it defeats the purpose of buying 2nd hand i.e to save money.

    Well, damn, that's a big CPU and GPU upgrade. The rest, eh, the case and psu are good in his and it's a 250GB SSD + TB HDD, that's maybe better use than a single 500GB SSD. Anyway, even that build is massive overkill for me. I think the issue when I price checked parts could be that old parts don't really go down so fast as better parts come out for the same price, so that's probably what's given me the wrong impression.

    I'm....going to work it out with him. What price would you pay for it?

    you could an even better pc for that price, used etc 800 would be fair.

    Well in fairness 800 is maybe a little too low, if you put it on the market tomorrow you would still get more than that. It's just a bit rich asking your own brother for €1,400! I would say 900-950 is fair for a sibling. If he put it up for sale he'd probably get 1 to 1.1k.

    A 500GB SSD would actually be a good bit more expensive than a 250GB SSD + 1TB HDD. :)

    Agree with TerrorFirmer here, 1400euro is an insane price to pay for a 2 generation old PC( ok 1 generation has only been released recently but its still 2 gens old ), especially for a 4 core when 6 core is now the midrange( even 8 core when you consider Ryzen 1700 ).

    Damn, I helped him build the thing like a year or so ago.

    He, uh, wanted €1,550 at first.

    Not true. A 250GB SSD averages about 100euro. A 500GB SSD, around 150euro. A 1TB HDD around 50euro.

    So basically the same value.

    Current SSD prices:
    240Gb = €75-80
    500Gb = €130-140
    1Tb = €250-270

    HDD:
    1Tb: €40
    2Tb: €55-70

    So you're saying a tenner difference, what was the point of that?
