Standalone software for family tree building?

Due to the size of my family, mum's in particular, I have my trees broken down on Ancestry:
    1. Mum Paternal
    2. Mum Maternal
    3. Dad (both sides)
    4. Mum's Paternal Grandmother (don't want that level of detail in mum's paternal tree).
    5. Dad's aunt's husband (he was from the townland where we live now, line is gone as they didn't have kids)

But things are a bit messy so I'm looking for a standalone program to help tidy them all up a bit, if that makes any sense, as well as remove my reliance on Ancestry for storing the data.

For instance, because of mum's three trees, everyone is now listed three separate times and because I've stopped my Ancestry subscription (I wasn't getting anything new out of it), I can't transfer the data over through the Hints function as I need a subscription to look at Hints. FamilySearch.org is really good for American records, and it's free, but that's yet another login/set of data to manage. Also looking for something that has good graph printing options - which is another reason I split them out, so that when I get them printed off for research/visiting etc, I'm only bringing the relevant tree instead of carting everything around. At the moment, I download the tree and send the file off to the printer - not the end of the world, but it can be costly if I'm doing a lot of updates. So something that has a pdf output format with good detail options instead of just parents, grandparents, great-grandparents etc....children, siblings, in-laws, date and place of birth, date and place of death, date and place of marriage, notes, pic formats, all of that.

Saw Family Tree Maker http://www.mackiev.com/ftm/ but don't know much about it. Trying to find a trial version but the manufacturers are very hard to contact if you haven't purchased the product.

Anyone know of any others that are good?
