Smart TV & Saorview

    Hey
On the lookout for a Smart TV 32" for less than €300 - so a budget TV. But we want the option of a Smart TV to have Netflix on it but also the option of having RTE Player or Saorview. The confusion seems to be around the fact that the majority of TVs are advertising with Freeview - which I understand we can't get in Ireland? One TV said in order to get Freeview all we need to do is just jump online and we can connect to it.

Bit confused so hoping someone can guide me in the right direction as to what I need to look out for?

    Cheers!

If it says it can handle Freeview HD (note the HD part), it can definitely handle Saorview. Just connect an aerial directly to it to receive the signal.
The key bit you need to see in the specs is a DVB-T2 tuner. Older TVs may DVB-T with MPEG4 encoding which will also work.

I think pretty much all Smart TVs will have a Netflix app.
However, RTE player is pretty rare and I think only the Samsung Smart TVs have it.
Tee apps a TV will have are more related to the make rather than the model.

Note, a lot of TVs have DVB-S2 tuners as well which means that they can also pick up all the free UK channels (BBC, ITV, C4 etc.) with a satellite feed.

If you can stretch another €50, this LG is on an offer with Saorview, satellite and described as having RTE and Netflix apps:

I quite like the webOS that LG use. If you want RTÉ Player, I think that narrows it down to LG webOS, Sony Androidtv and Samsung.

Much appreciated. I wasn't sure if a Freeview tv would pickup Saorview when it wasn't being advertised!

We're based in Dublin. What type of aerial do i need to pickup so I can get the TV working?:)

    Much appreciate all replies!

It should be a Freeview HD set to be sure it has the right MPEG4 decoder. Plain freeview TVs may not show a picture.
If you have a clear view of 3rock mountain or the Kippure mast, you may get away with a cheap indoor aerial. Get one from your local euro store NOT any kind of powered / boosted /amplified gizmo that only wastes electricity. Otherwise consider an outdoor aerial, possibly fitted in the attic.

Powercity have a compact aerial for 15e, I have seen them installed in attics and outside. Reasonably priced and works well in the Dublin area.

And just to clarify; a Saorview approved box/tv still would need an aerial regardless? So if we didn't get the Freeview HD we would still need an aerial?

There is no RTE Player on Sony Android TV's.

Oh, so there's not! I stand corrected, honestly expected it to be there since it's on Android (of course, not all Android devices, I realise now). That's a shame.

I can't edit my post anymore either to remove the Sony. Maybe a mod can, incase anyone is mislead by my post?

    Can it be side loaded?
