Compensation from accident affecting disability payments

    Hi there

Posting on behalf of a friend. He was in a serious car accident a few years ago. Once recovered he tried a couple of fas courses but was unable to work due to the injuries he had sustained. He received some compensation, afaik it was little over 100k. He has been living off the money for a while now but is afraid of depleting it fully when he may require it in the future either to buy a house or for future medical expenses.

Just wondering if this money is included in the means test for social welfare payments like disability allowance? Can't see anything about it on their website. Or is there any alternative to disability that is not means tested?

    Yes it's considered means

    €50000 is disregarded.
This means that if he still has say,€100000, they will ignore ,€50000 and they will say that for the other €50000 that that is worth €150 per week to him so they would deduct that from his Disability Allowance which is currently €193.
So he would get DA at the rate of €43 per week.
If he’s living alone he’ll get the Living Alone increase €9 and he’ll get a free TV license, the electricity allowance and free travel.
