A friend who is the head of a small non-profit cultural organization here wants to rename it to include the name of a figure. The figure isn't well known and lived during the 1800s.

Are there any legal considerations the friend needs to address before using the name?

    Nihil obstat, AFAIK

While the 1800s should be safe enough, realise that there may be parties that object. Be careful there is no passing off or other problems.

The problem with modern dead people is that that their victims may still be alive and come out with all sorts of accusations.
