New build

Hey guys,

Looking for some advice with new build. Currently have a 960 2GB along with an i5 4460 which runs pretty much everything at medium - high but interested in getting something a lot stronger that'll last a few years. Friend is interested in buying a PC so think I'm just gonna sell him mine and not bother use any of the existing parts.

Want to build it around a 1080, not sure which one just yet -Was looking at the strix and that seems to be one of the better ones gaming wise. For CPU was thinking originally do get something like an i5 7600k but I'm now leaning towards the i7 7700k - I know you don't really need an i7 for gaming but was thinking I may as well get it in case I ever wanted to push its limits but not sure. Was looking at the new Ryzen lineup but always preferred intel over AMD tbh.

So yeah, that's what I'm thinking for the core of the build if you guys have any advice or what parts I should finalise the build with that'd be great! Budget can be flexible but thinking around £1200 or so

Ask your mate if he really wants to buy your machine; if he's unsure you might as well just upgrade the GPU to GTX 1080 (and add SSD if you haven't already) and call it a day.

A Xeon 1231 v3 is also a possible CPU upgrade.

Just pick up a 2nd hand i7-4770 or 4790 and get a GTX1080. Job done. No need for a new machine from a performance POV unless you really want a new build and it'll save you a lot of money too.

If you are building new I would go with an i5-8400 as suggested above. The i5-7600 and i7-7700's are largely obsolete now for a brand new build as the new i5's are six core, as are AMD's Ryzen equivalents (the 1600 and 1600X).

So I spoke to my friend and he said he'll definitely buy it as he doesn't want to bother build a whole new system and I'll be giving it to him for pretty cheap anyway.

So it looks like I'll just go for a full new build. Pretty certain about everything except the CPU - Does the i5-8400 really out preform the i7-7700k?

Its not that it out performs it right now but its a six core piece versus the four of the i7, which bodes better if you plan keeping the core system for a fairly long time. It's also a lot cheaper and you'd be on a newer platform also.

Ryzen is also a very good option and can be cheaper even again but the Ryzen 1600 would be more behind. Still solid though and fairly sound going forward and the cheapest of all.

Also worth noting that the new i3s are basically last generation i5. Four core and thread. So a £110 i3 is basically your i5 7500.

Intel Coffee Lake has low availability.
It's basically a paper launch.
I'd recommend Ryzen.

Agreed on the availability. My order is getting pushed back all the time. Going to go for the older i5 7600k as the guy I'm building for is desperate for Intel. The overclocking potential should be enough for a good few years either way I feel.

I'd drop the PSU down to RMx 650W or TX-M 750W, no point paying that premium IMHO

I would also swap Asus ROG Strix for Palit/Gainward (#1), Zotac AMP! (#2), Gigabyte 3-fan/MSI 2-fan (#3).

Also your RAM kit is showing as £170; there's plenty of kits for £155-160.

Will 650W be enough for a decent overclock snd for future upgrading? Also getting the 8600k on overclockers although there’s no retail ones seems to be only oems any difference there or?

Even an overclocked 1-GPU machine barely hits 360W under load.

Ram is Overpriced.

Keeps you in your colour scheme and gets you a 275GB SSD for about £10 more; you can get 16GB 3000mhz RAM for £125 but ut;s bright blue, the difference of 2800 vs 3000 on Intel won't be noticeable either. Total power is 399W so 550W is more than enough for the PSU also.
