I'm a sucker for an old pump action 12 Bore, so pounced on this 1896 Spencer on a table at a local antique auction house.
What a shame it's been decommissioned. Mag. time crimped, breech face firing pin welded and a chunk cut out of the underside of the barrel.

And a Bannerman as well.:( For those who don't know...Bannerman was the forefather of the Army surplus shop.at its heyday they had an island in the Hudson River as their main depot.

The same Spencer that made the spencer rifle/carbine during the American civil war ? I know Sam Colt took over Spencer at some stage, could this be a badge engineered colt ?

I am sure it could be repaired, but would it be worthwhile ?

Spencer seems to have gone bust after the civil war era rifles. Then started up again in the 1880's with this design shotgun. Only to get into financial difficulties again and sold this design to Bannerman.
So two different Spencer companies, both of which ended up being sold.

It's an interesting design with a kind of pivoting breech block.
