Folks, my father drives a '03 Focus. Recently he noticed a clicking noise coming from the engine bay. Had a look last night, and it seems to be coming from the area around the alternator / auxiliary belt.

It is a definite click, maybe every 30-45 seconds when idling, but I think I can hear a very faint metallic ping at the end of it. Any ideas or suggestions are most welcome

Maybe it's an injector or a relay? Start with the easy stuff first, like getting a scan tool to view live data.

If you can remove the alternator belt, probably will need the special tool to roll the stretchy belt off the crankshaft pulley. Then run the engine and see if noise stops. If it does check the pulleys for binding. The evap vent solenoid is in this area, this will click at certain rpms to vent the charcoal canister. This could be clicking?

My initial thought was that it sounded like a relay or solenoid, will have a look. Any ideas of the revs this kicks in at?
